Passed by M-Benz today in the neighborhood. They have a used '13 M6 for sale at 97k! Wonder which idiot traded it in, and what vehicle he got in exchange! How would the dealer sell the M in comparison to their AMG?

Are you kidding me? This is not how car dealerships work. Car dealers LOVE these kinds of trade ins. They gouged that guy on the M6 trade in value. They made him feel special by offering a cash incentive that was off the back of MB-USA(not the dealership) on the purchase of lease of his new MB.

Now this dealership will undoubtedly sell this car for more, at a margin that is likely higher than the margin on that car brand new from wholesale cost.

Dealerships make a LOT of money taking in trades of any value, even the dirt cheap cars that will be sold to wholesale and they know exactly the difference between what they give you and what they get. And selling CPO cars of their own make and other brands is also a great way to make a fair margin above what the actual used car value is.

That being said, I don't know what I'd have traded an M6 in for at MB. apples to apples, that car is more interesting to me than any CL or SL class car which is far more than that marked price.

Not trying to be defensive, just realistic: he didn't say they were already better, just moving forward while the last few M offerings have been bloated (M3 is 5 years old you know) and by the way even though it's more expensive I'm sure a C63 black outhandles a factory M3. That said, I still like te current M3 more and hopefully they won't mess up the next gen (not that I care much)

I'm not talking about now. I'm talking about the direction that M is heading. I'm an M guy. I drive one and the M3 is the only car right now that still holds on to what M used to be about. And just a FYI, a C63 is not too far behind an M3 in handling. Outhandles? No, but damn close. If you disagree, you've never driven one. The new CLA45 AMG? Smoked our M135i. Our M2 better be on it's game.

Funny you should ask that. Just got back from lunch with my customer who has a C63 which I've driven on several occasions. He loves the power, but hates the numb steering. He was coming from owning BMW's, too. He wanted a M3, but they stopped making a sedan and has 3 little kids. Guess what? He's getting a M3/M4 when it comes out because he misses the connection, steering, balance, etc. of a BMW vs. his Merc. The car is a beast and pulls like a freight train. But, does not and will not handle like a BMW for about the same price. We don't own crystal balls, but my money is on BMW to stay ahead of the competition when it comes their performance dept's. (AMG, Audi S, etc.)
