Further, regardless of production numbers, the actual inventory is extremely close in the "low mileage" pool. 11 e92 vs. 9 e90. I'd argue the production number is playing very small role in the overall cost delta.

Anyway, just a fun analysis!
Dealer pricing data loses relevance when you're talking about special interest cars. The more niche the car, the bigger the disconnect.

Pretty much like any other car with navigation system? I still prefer changing settings on my '08 iDrive system than without a screen at all.
You do realize that E9x production numbers are so low that the people on this forum make up a huge fraction of the market, right?

And, ugh, CCC NAV is horrible. I've got plenty of experience with it, and it's hateful. So much better to be without.

Garage List
2013 BMW M3  [0.00]
Thankfully my experience with Carmax back in 2018 was positive. Bought my 2013 ZCP, DCT, CF roof with just under 20k miles for $44k. I was looking for a low mileage M3 and this by far was the lowest that I found at the time. I thought it was priced fair. They didn't even know it was a ZCP and they didn't list the packages (Cold weather, Premium or Tech) it came with so it wasn't even priced accordingly (according to BB at the time). One of the pictures of the engine showed that it had a Dinan intake and when I asked about it, they said that was stock. I feel I got a pretty good price at the time.
Before I went to Carmax I scheduled an appt with BMW across the street at the auto mall for a full inspection and oil change. Everything checked out, knock on wood haven't had to bring it back to Carmax for anything yet. I did get the extended warranty though.

Not to turn this into a sedan vs. coupe debate, but I did pull some MMR data for fun. See below, it appears your theory is correct, however I wouldn't call a $930 delta "a lot more".

Some notes:
  • I excluded cars with over 80,000 miles
  • MY2010 had less data than any other MY
  • No colors, regions, or conditions were excluded
Where and how did you get this data? Just curious.

It is wholesale pricing data, but really not accurate for this type of a car. Every M car that is worth buying at wholesale, has crazy amount of bidders and always goes over the MMR value.

I use a bluetooth connector and I can browse through my full Apple Music collection which includes playlists and all. For this feature alone, the iDrive is worth it. Maintenance and everything else is displayed beautifully on the screen. I can configure all the settings with ease. It also offers elevation/navigation information when I'm up in the canyon's without phone service. Double hump also looks better in my opinion, makes the interior look MUCH more modern. It's the perfect balance of screen and analog.

Will it work in 2040? Will it look okay in 2040? I don't care, because in 2020 (and the last 10 years), I use it daily and it works great. Not sure what the obsession is with base non-nav cars, it's just harder to use with no upside unless you like the looks (which is subjective).
Bluetooth music doesn't even work unless it's a 2011.5+ car unless an earlier modern year upgraded the electronics, which isn't that difficult actually.

Though you can get an aftermarket device for it as you said. I prefer having the idrive besides the weight. I don't find it distracting like some and it's useful to change settings when needed. I even use the nav sometimes because I don't always like messing with my phone and taking it out of my pocket.

Got mine through car max. Solid experience without the whole car sales haggling bs. Price was competitive car was in great shape and honestly the car max extended warranty is really good. Few issues that have popped up have been fully covered no questions asked. Whenever I tell mechanics I have their warranty they have all mentioned great experience getting things covered thru them. Last time few things popped up I had the dealership do the work and they covered a whopping 6k bill!

Honestly, if you guys need a warranty, definitely try to get it at CarMax.

You'll pay a bit more for a CarMax car but if shit hits the fan, one thing CarMax hates the most is bad publicity so they'll bend over backward to make things right. It's crazy to not buy the CarMax warranty if you have the chance...
