I don't like Tesla's shoddy build quality, but I think you have it backwards. To be clear, I've never owned a Tesla, hate Musk, and currently don't own any TSLA stock. However, improving build quality is a natural process for any automaker. The fact that Tesla builds saleable cars this soon is a testament to their tenacity. They are ahead of the curve in autonomous driving and EV drivetrain development. Neither of those things are particularly hard (they just require money and time), but they are a generation or two ahead of pretty much anyone else. It'll be easier for Tesla to up build quality than it would be for BMW to match Tesla's technology.

Significantly improved with 2019.16 release.

But we should be talking about BMW here.

I apologize for hijacking this thread with my random "Tesla already does that" comment.

Tesla is doing great but their build quality is not very good and as the competition starts heading towards them they're going to have to up their game to remain relevant.

However their powertrains and their current autonomous driving is way more advanced than the rest of the pack.

First Steps At Autonomy!

I think this is amazing. This is the introduction to more autonomy with cars. I would personally still rather have control of my vehicle, but knowing that the car could help stop fatalities is a good thing in my book.

Absolutely.

Tesla tech is light years ahead of BMW's.
Shame their built quality doesn't match the list price.

Honestly I think a few bad examples have put a stigma in Tesla. Every single Tesla I've ridden in did not show any signs of bad build quality. I can't say the same for every single BMW, Honda, or Dodge.

I doubt this feature will really be able to stop a car 100% of the time at a red light:
1 - each country or state have a different layout and equipment for the traffic light
2 - what will happen when a truck or another car will block the view of the traffic light
3 - what will happen when the traffic light is out of service or there's a power outage
4 - what if the light become green but a pedestrian is still crossing or another car is running on the red light on the other approach...a driver will be able to make the correct decision and avoid a crash...a computer not sure!

This new feature will create a new bunch of idiots drivers that are becoming more and more irresponsible

As a safety gimmick this is useless to me. I'm paying attention to the road the entire time. What would be extremely useful and save customers a lot of headache/money is if BMW's upcoming integrated Drive Recorder dashcam can continuously record hours of footage using all surrounding cameras like Tesla does, and overwrite old footage when the storage is full.

You know, instead of recording 40 seconds "in the event of a crash". A person on a scooter "falling down" and faking a personal injury claim wouldn't trigger a crash sensor, one of many scenarios where a dashcam would save a ton of potential liability.

The BMW Advanced Eye thing doesn't count as it looks like a webcam wart from 1995.

Quote:
The BMW Drive Recorder is another new addition to the options list. It can be ordered in conjunction with Parking Assistant Plus and will be available soon for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, BMW 7 Series, BMW 8 Series, new BMW X5 and new BMW X7. The BMW Drive Recorder uses the cameras of the various driver assistance systems to record video footage from different points around the vehicle, before saving the recordings so they can be either watched later on the Control Display when the car is stationary or exported via the USB port.

Drivers can, therefore, shoot videos while driving through spectacular scenery, for example, or performing impressive maneuvers on the race track, and then send them to their mobile device and share them. Recordings can be up to 40 seconds in length, comprising the 20 seconds of video saved immediately prior to the Drive Recorder being activated and the next 20 seconds. The Drive Recorder can be started at any time from the iDrive menu. Another benefit of the system is that, in the event of a collision, the 20 seconds before the accident and the 20 seconds following it are automatically recorded and saved, so they can be referred back to in any subsequent reconstruction of the incident.

Yeah i have the ACC on my i3s and i must say when it works its an amazing piece of tech but most of the time witch is annoying as furballs from a cat, it doesn't work properly and that is quite sad.

It works best on a cloudy day.

When it dosn't work

-Super sunlight (For some reason the sun shut downs the acc and makes the car freakout so you have to stop and turn of the car then turn it on to make it work again)

-Reflections from road signs when the light beams hits and reflects back at the camera then it shuts down.

-When there is a car standing still next to the road it shuts down.

-In extreme rainfall it also shuts down.

So yeah BMW got some work to do on their tech.

Adaptive Cruise in my past two i3's have worked very well for my 80 mile daily commute. One every few weeks the system would warn me that road conditions have disabled the ACC. I normally wait a few seconds and turn it back on without fail. The only time it completely locked me out was when I discovered that a huge bird shit almost completely covered the sensor on the windshield. I'd say once every two weeks is pretty good considering the amount of miles I drive. This is in Los Angeles weather by the way. Maybe it's different in extreme fog, rain, or snow.

Hmm maybe i should check with the dealer if it configured right or something like that because i have had quite some issues with it working properly, gonna check it out.

Agreed and when they can't get these "simple" pieces of autonomy to work you have to wonder about the more complex and safety critical functions they are pushing on us, lane keeping assist in the G20 is another doozy.

While I don't do a ton of night driving, I use the high beam assist and I have never been flashed by a driver coming in the other direction. However, I have the adaptive lights and had them coded to undo the disabling of the antidazzlde feature.
