Seems like one of those typical stories of morale, but if true, I'd definitely help the guy out with priorities and eventually adopting a child provided the recipients didn't have any major financial problems of their own...

If he wanted his kids to have it he would have mentioned it in his will. My guess was that he hid the money from his family for a reason. Most likely as insurance for himself. When he died he cashed out.
I wouldnt feel bad for keeping it.
