DCT Transmission Leak

I was at the dealership this morning for some routine service and while the car was up on the rack the tech discovered a leak in one of the two external lines running to & from the trans thermostat block . They opened a ticket with BMWNA and I'm awaiting the verdict. According to the tech and my SA, BMW (currently?) doesn't make these lines, but rather generally replaces the entire transmission. Anyone have any experience with something similar?

I have heard tranny leaks for multiple reasons. It is typically not a big deal your SA will tell you whats up with the tranny and test for damage if any.

Nothing wrong with getting a new tranny for free if under warranty? The worst thing is order time for a new tranny or any parts coming from Germany takes forever!!

Yep whatever the outcome, its a warranty item.

Wonder why they would opt to replace trans over getting a new line?

Dealers do not open up and service DCT transmissions. They are instructed to send them in to be serviced and replace with a new unit to the customer when there is a internal hardware failure.

I can confirm that BMW does make and sell the lines, as we purchased them for cores in the process of adapting temperature sensors to the DCT transmission:

As Roman said it may be that BMW is more inclined to repair DCT transmissions off-site.

I'm not surprised to hear this. I'm still waiting to hear from my SA, however I'll touchbase with him tomorrow (friday).

Good to know that at least the parts are available, even if BMWNA requires a full change out of the trans. Folks may need these in the future (or maybe now by the sound of your post).

Thanks. It's a little worrisome, however I haven't seen any fluid under the car (thankfully). This seems to be a slow seepage rather than a massive failure.

I'm also thankful that I'm still covered under the original warranty.

I would guess that BMW is probably looking at the DCTs closely for failure modes. Even if its just the lines?...still find that odd.

I think that the failed DCTs have led to...hopefully...something even more reliable on the F10 M5. Which is supposed to be the same tranny except it has been strengthened to handle more torque.

All in an effort to put the SMG out of everyone's memories???

Not really sure of the "failed" DCT's you speak of... Unless you're referring to SC'd. I've come to the conclusion that these trannys are pretty tough.

It surprises me that they would spend all the labor and money swapping out a DCT transmission over what looks to be $300.00 is hoses. It would also be great if the transmission got replaced with a new one rather then a remanufactured one. I am not sure what type of parts they use when replacing items like these.

These hoses leaked on mine, so my dealer replaced them under warranty. They also fitted a newer style of DCT sump at the same time.

Good call on the part availability. Spoke with my SA today and BMWNA has authorized the replacement of the bad hose. The estimate is 7 labor hours for the job. I'll get this done late next week.

I had a leak fixed on my dct today. It was coming from the oil pan. replaced sump, gasket, pan and oil.

Ilia, are those hoses visible if I slipped my able body underneath the car? I want to check if they are leaking.

Yes, they are on the drives side of the tranny, but you'll need to get most of the way under the car to see them. Mine is leaking at the point where the rubber(?) hose connects with the metal collar. I've circled it in my first post.

I could not readily see the top connections, which seem to be above the transmission.

I'd be worried about having my car serviced by a dealer that doesn't know how to lookup part numbers for the *only* brand of car they work on!

They mentioned that the part didn't show as available for them, but rather required consultation with corporate.

Paul shoulda gone 6speed even if the DCT is a great transmission.
