costco won't sell me tires because i don't have a spare

so i was trying replace my oem tires at costco and when i was going to make a purchase they told me that since the tires are not runflats i need to have a spare. and since i haven't have one they wouldn't sell the tires to me.
i guess it's the law to have a spare in California?

To be honest with you, I was not aware of this either until recently. I had an E46 M3 that my son just inherited (Laguna Seca Blue with Dove Grey interior, but I digress), and when it was time to replace the OEM Run Flat tires the first time, I went with no run flats to improve performance and it made a heck of a difference.

When I bought my current E90 M3, I just assumed it was the same deal, but one quick read at the supplement Owners Manual (not the thick one, but the thin manual with the photo on an M3 engine), and I found the following statement buried under Wheels and Tires:

"Correct wheels and tires: Contrary to the description in the Owner's Manual for (sic)Vehicle, your BMW M3 is not equipped with run-flat tires".

Page 57 if I recall. Cheers!:

The E46 M3 did not come with runflat tires either; like all other M3/Mcoupe/Mroadster/M5/M6 etc it came with the M-mobility kit and normal summer performance tires.

Speaking of the M mobility kit, last month I just got around to replacing the foam canister with a new, fresh one as the one that came with the car was overdue last year. Better safe than sorry I guess.

Hahahaaaa...good thing I never fell for the "recommendation" by the service advisor at my BMW dealer, then.
Thanks for the heads up!
