From stock to FBO+e85 with multiple dyno pulls to show gains from mods

Hey Everyone!

I picked up an e92 m3 a few weeks ago and ever since then I have been dying to go to the dyno and get a couple of mods done. I bought the car with an ESS tune and IPE F1 Full Exhaust so I don't have any information as to what the car would have dyno'd stock but my tuner said somewhere in the 340whp range judging by the numbers I put down with him. So, here it goes:

Day 1: I went to RK Tunes because I heard the owner Jordan gets good power out of the s65 motor. He is actually the tuner for the fastest and the quickest N/A 4.0L m3's. First they strapped it onto the dyno and did a baseline pull. With the ESS Tune and IPE exhaust I put down 360whp/298.6wtq. I don't think it's too far out of the realm to say that completely stock I could have put down around 335whp(this is what most stock m3's put down on his dyno), so we will go with that for arguments sake.

Most of the pulls were pretty consistent around the 360whp range so after those results they threw in my K&N drop in filter, and he put his ots map in the car. After a few pulls we managed to squeak out 376whp/296wtq which was a gain of 17whp over the ESS tune that I had. I was pretty happy but obviously I wanted more! This is when we went to the gas station and put a couple gallons of e85 in and he flashed his e85 map. Pull after pull the readings came in with an impressive 386whp/296wtq! The 10whp gain was noticed throughout the whole pull which is very impressive. When I came in I really wanted to hit 400whp, and we had one more mod to put in which was the pulley. Unfortunately the pulley was in one of his employees cars and they woudl be in the next day so I went home for the night and was really surprised by the cars performance and the way it pulled until redline. Afterall I had about 26whp extra across the whole graph so it should feel different.

Day2: After a night of dreaming about 400whp I went to the shop at 11am to do the pulley install and also some more pulls to see what gains the pulley gave me. At the same time he took some timing out because he told me sometimes these engines tend to overcompensate if the car isn't hitting timing so it pulls too much timing resulting in a loss of HP. With a little bit of timing pulled out and the pulley installed we gained another 11WHP AND we gained around 10wtq!. 397WHP/308wtq! 62WHP over stock, and 37WHP over my ess tune/ipe exhaust combo.

Driving the car is completely different now. The car is a BEAST for what it is. the DCT makes the car a formidable opponent now to cars with a considerable amount of more horsepower especially if they are a manual.

I just wanted to say thank you to Jordan @ RK tunes and the staff over there. They are really nice guys who know what they are doing. If you happen to need a tune, DO NOT go with an ots tune like ess or dinan or a company like that. Jordans tune kicks the shit out of theirs, and he allows you to run e85 which is like $1.59/gal by me which is amazing.

i couldn' compliment them enough and I look forward to putting on a supercharger so he can work his magic with that as well. Thanks for reading and if you go to RK Tunes, mention my name please. I would like them to know I really appreciate what they did for me. Happy Driving!

NOTE: I don't have the dyno pull with the 397whp/308tq yet. That will be uploaded later on in the day when it is sent to me.

I highly doubt any tune gives 17hp more than another one with no other changes
17hp is the total you get from the tune in the first place

I don't doubt it. When we hit the 397whp by going with less aggressive timing, we loaded the car back up with the more aggressive timing tune and it made about 4-5whp less. Since it wasn't hitting target the car would pull too much timing resulting in less power. So even going from one tune to another of his own had a difference of 5whp.

I'm also going back since I purchased the Macht Schnell Stage 2 intake/scoops and we are going to see what that does compared to the drop-in K&N. I'm hoping to crack the 400whp mark.

Yes 100% e85. Our fuel system can run it without a problem. All you need is a flash. He provides a windows tablet for $100 that allows you to flash inbetween a 93/e85 map.

Yeah I just got the gintani e85 tune a few days ago. Car feels a lot quicker. And for those who don't believe fuel and pulleys/intake done make a difference, me and 2 other friends who have e92 M3's did a dyno day on this famous mobile dyno in SoCal. My m3 had fully catless x pipe, oem modded muffler and gintani 91 tune. I made 340 (it was a low reading dyno). M3 2 has mrf fully catless x pipe and BPM tune, he made same 340 as me. M3 number 3 has catless x pipe, Evolve 95 tune and advanced fuel dynamics kit with 60-70% e85 with a drop in filter and macht schnell pulleys. He made 380 whp. We all ran in the same conditions, oil temps all the same and everything. With just pulleys, drop in filter and different fuel he made 40 more horsepower than my buddy and I.

For anyone who wants this tune you can get it remotely also. You would just need to contact Jordan (https://www.rktunes.com/) and let him know what you want.

I am also going to be getting rid of my K&N Air filter which has 100mi on it so if anyone would like to purchase that from me I'll let it go for like $60.

Very nice thread and results. I went from drop in used AA filter to used Macht Schnell intake and felt 0 difference on the butt and sound dyno. Hopefully this will prove if there is any difference after all.

Take a look at that. These are he results I'm hoping for. I'm actually only hoping to gain 3whp so I can hit 400whp lol.

Man, I have the Alex/Alpinemss Tune plus MS Stg2 intake/scoops, MS pulley and full Akra evo exhaust (100 cell race cats)...and I'm dying to run e85. Just not sure if I should go w/ a tune like RK/Gintani or if I should go advanced fuel dynamics so I can run either e85, 93 or a combo of both and let the fuel sensor do the work. Anyone have any thoughts there? Would love to hit that 400whp mark.

400 rwhp SAE on a Dynojet is impressive. Only a handful of cars have done it. E85 should bring more into that group.

Considering that RK is cheaper, you get more power out of it, and you get a cool little tablet, I don't think it's a tough decision at all.

My car is night/day difference from his tune. He probably has the most 400whp NA s65's out there.

Congrats on the impressive numbers. Although you had a good experience with Jordan I think that's less likely to happen than more. I've nothing positive to say and neither do any of my buddies that have dealt with him. Fingers crossed you don't have to deal with his customer service.

He has treated me fine so I can't complain. If I ever have a problem with anything I can drive 20min and I'll be there. May I ask what problems you had?

+1. I personally know of two BMW owners who had horrible experiences with RK. I would never trust them with tuning my motor, let alone give them my business.

For anyone reading, do a thorough Google search on RK tunes... Buyer beware.
