For whatever reason, they disabled it during a firmware update in Oct and it wasn't re-enabled till 2 weeks ago.

Currently,

Hero9, with USB-C to 3.5mm and a 3.5mm extension with windcat on it.
Sorry for all the questions to follow, I'm just not a fan of re-inventing the wheel if it's not necessary.

Do you know if it's a requirement to use the GoPro brand USB-C to 3.5 adapter with the Hero 9?

There are lots of choices on Amazon for adapters, but most of them are labeled as "Headphone" to 3.5 adapters, rather than "Microphone" adapters.
Do you know if there is a difference?

What Microphone are you using?

You have to use the GoPro USB-C to 3.5mm mic adapter on a GoPro. It is pricey but GoPro only allows their official adapter to work with the GoPro.

There's some GoPro specific hardware in the adapter to make it work. That's why its so bulky.

With how poorly GoPro stuff works I would never use an aftermarket adapter... it barely works when it costs $60, good luck with a $10 part...

Last night I updated the GoPro 9 and hopefully now it works with the external mike... but I've been trying to charge it for 4 hours this morning and it still doesn't want to charge to 100%. Although voice and wifi are off, it still turns on every couple hours on its own and won't charge over 80%

Thank you!
I feel MUCH better about placing an order for an adapter and a Mic/Wind Muffler.

Try the GoPro adapter at your own peril. Mine sorta worked for a little while and then stopped working completely. I will never give GoPro another dollar. Their policy of just making new products and not supporting the older generation of products is total garbage.

I consider GoPro is the tallest midget. I dislike using their stuff, but where else can I get 4k60 video that works 80% of the time?

The AIM Smartycam sounds like a much better option, but its resolution is so poor I prefer to not have video.

I need enough resolution to show whether or not I screwed the pooch in an on-track incident while the stewards are yelling at me, and no more

SO far, the AIM cam has had enough to serve as my on-track incident/stewarding room umbrella, and it has not rained since I got it synced up with an aIM dash heh

GoPro definitely needs to increase their reliability. I had so many times where the GoPro would lock up and I had to pull the battery to reset it. I had it lock up once mid recording and I lost the whole video.

Every model has had problems from the GoPro 4 through the 9 now. I don't know why they still can't figure it out!

Is this special door holding up?

Right there with ya.

Assume you didn't resolve this? Seems odd to have worked/then not?

For the $8 I spent on it or whatever it has been perfect! And it seriously saved me a couple of months ago when I left the batteries for the gopro at home but still had a charging cable and battery juice pack I was able to use to run the camera and get video.
