Thoughts on SS oil filter?

Are there any real benefits from this? Costs 6x as much as the paper filter, so given I change my oil once a year it doesn't give me any real money saving lol.
What about all benefits the manufacturer claims, such as better oil cooling, better lubrication on startup, less parasitic loss from oil pump = quicker revs and more power? Any downsides like worse filtering capability?

This smacks of "solution to a problem that didn't exist". The OEM paper filters are proven and are carefully engineered to work in a specific motor.

Ask the manufacturer to provide third-party verification of the supposed benefits of their exact filter in the S65. Bet you $20 they can't.

This question was asked earlier this year. No one here has tried it and posted. My wife won’t let me clean it in the dishwasher and at the rate I drive it would take 5 years to pay for itself.

Wow - 97% less backpressure...

Differential pressure is present in any filter. Given the same filter area, better filtration will result in higher back pressure. Just look at the low flow bypass filters - they cannot tolerate high flow to remove small debris.

Very little back pressure means very little filtration. The only way to reduce back pressure and maintain filtration is to increase the surface area of the filter. Pretty tough to put more pleats in there than the OE one already has.

Unless there is some voodoo magic in there...

I like Troy Jeup and he knows these motors and the S85 well. If he is a supporter, then I have to reconsider my past skepticism.

My brain just will not let me believe in these without data. ECS site list the filter material to have this property: "A one inch square of this material has a flow rate of 1.9gpm and filters down to 35 microns." They do not say 99% removal of 35 micron material. So, does it catch the odd 35 micron particle?

While I cannot find info for the BMW/Mahle filter, Fram states that their paper filter is 95% effective at removing 20 micron particles. I would hope Mahle is the same, especially given the price.

Also, the S65 engine does not seem to be oil flow limited at the filter, as data collected by AutoTallent supports. Hell, the oil flow at redline with BE bearings is only around 8GPM (0.5L/s - assume this is total oil flow in the engine). Does that mean that the filter really only needs to have a total of 4.2 square inches of material to handle full flow? (Take an OE filter apart - there are many many many square inches of filtration area). There is also no mention of what differential pressure is generated flowing 1.9GPM through 1 square inch of material. Is that its useful limit?

If these things were really really awesome, they would loudly and proudly sing their own praises with details and 3rd party verified comparisons.

Until such time as they do, I will stick with Mahle.
