Big F Up? Wrong Power Steering Fluid
I have an 2008 e92 m3 convert... we had pretty frigid temperatures here in ny the past few days. It hit about -5 one day and my car was outside four about 8-9 hrs.. It was making some weird whining noise whenever I accelerated and turned..
I researched and people said online it can be power steering fluid.. My buddy checked my car and said i was practically empty (but in retrospect it was at second line) I didnt really research that part. I went to advanced auto parts and I gave them my model and the system said Castrol Transmax atf+4. I topped it off. I drove around it for 3 more days maybe totaling about 50 miles. I went to a mechanic and he told me I used the wrong one CHF 11S is the correct one. How bad of an F up is this? Could I have caused irreversible damage at this point. I bought the right one and flushed out the old one using the pump method 5 times.. on the 4th time it still came out a bit brown.. but CHF 11s is Green. Should I repeat 5 more times?? or is this not such a big deal. I know I am an idiot for trusting my bud, and autozone rather than researching thoroughly Last edited by abitrandom; 01-11-2014 at 09:41 PM.. Reason: add |

Turkey baster method will get the majority of it out. For the short time it was in, I doubt anything happened. ATF is still a hydraulic fluid.

FWIW, the noise is most likely differential clutch pack noise.

Guess you missed the big green sticker that says CHF 11S ONLY on the cap? I got my CHF 11S off amazon with prime shipping, $23 is a little high, but no tax and I didn't have to go to 10 stores to try and find someone who had it.

Mine doesn't have a green sticker on it. There's a warning on the cap but its hard to read.

CHF11S and CHF202 are super easy to get. Pep Boys almost always has it, as do NAPA and O'Reilly. If they don't have it in stock, you can get ship-to-store at no charge. The dealers also stock it.

83290429576 is the part number and $23.52 is the MSRP, but YMMV.
For reference, Pep Boys, O'Reilly, Advance Auto Parts, and NAPA sell it for $21. It's almost always in stock for me, and you can of course use coupons to bring the price down. Sometimes they have CHF202 for the same price, which supersedes CHF11S.

I own a 2011 E90 M3 and the reservoir cap says ATF, but i have never heard of any other m3 having the same cap, is it possible that the cap was replaced with a regular 3 series cap and im supposed to be using chf11s instead of atf?
