Anyone Recognise these Noises - M3 E92 DCT 2012
Afternoon M3's,
Im having a bit of difficulty solving these problems. They have prooved hard to replicate for the mechanic. Last night, i took the car out, done a little drifting and some light abuse and managed to capture the noises on video. I will be sharing the video with the mechanic, but maybe you guys have some ideas also. M3Post has always prooved more knowledgable than my best mechanic. 1. Whining from front end. Unable to replicate noise when car is not moving. I think hard steering triggers it and makes it louder, but noise is apparent even in straight line. Noticably louder after spirited driving, and not very loud after taking it easy for a min or two. 2. Metal Ping from Mid/Rear of car. Only noticed when driving slowly. Can replicate noise when making car jerk (Accell/Decell) or by agressively steering left or right and 'Swinging' car. If anyone has any ideas what to check, please let me know. Thanks |

Whine: power steering - check fluid level. Probably need to add some
Ping noise: rock or debris in rear brake dust shield - usually clears itself or you can push the dust shield back a bit to try to clear it manually |

Agree. The whine is most likely power steering low.
Rock or debris in the brake dust shield would be more of a weird grinding noise in my experience. The "ping" or "clang" I would call it, seems to be more when the suspension is loaded/unloaded. It seems like in the video your driving slow between coasting...applying power...engine brake...coasting...turning...etc. I would start checking linkages in the rear end (i suspect rear end because this is your drive axle). The "clang" doesn't sound like the typical driveshaft cowbell center-support-bearing. Just more like rear end area.

Yeah...that might be a good idea too.
Might be a good idea to ask the OP if any recent work was done. Might point towards the issue.

Thanks for input everyone.
Excellent troubleshooting skills as always. The Power Steering Fluid was indeed below both of the lines...... So hopefully that's a nice quick fix. I dropped the car at the garage on Sunday to check out the rest of the bits. |

Just one more for the consensus:
I've had both sounds, although not at the same time. Whine was power steering fluid low. Ping was the brake dust shield bent in a bit (think maybe valet backing in over the curb), shop bent it back by hand. |
