Vibrations from 40 MPH to 85+ MPH anyone else have this issue?

Hello!

I have been working on my E92 for the last year and a half and wanted to ask who has resolved or at least can point me in the right direction to get this damn steering vibration out...

The car recently had engine work, new brakes, clutch, differential, axles, and bearings, which cured a good amount of the shake, but I am still getting consistent shakes from 40mph (it may be lower, but this is where I find it starts shaking the most. The feeling in the steering wheel intensifies after 60 and from 60 to 85mph, it becomes the most volatile.

What have you done to fix this situation? I do know that there are spacers on all 4 and also have the stud conversions, but I would doubt that would make this much shaking. Car drives straight as an arrow, just the vibration from those speeds really takes the fun out of the car 😭.

Hope to get some feedback!!

Incorrectly fitted spacers can definitely cause vibration. Poorly balanced wheels or incorrectly torqued wheels can as well. Ditch the spacers would be cheapest way to diagnose. Then try a road force balance of your wheels.

This.

Lived with the same vibration for 18 months on my e93. Went away when I readied the car for sale…..after removing my TMS spacers. Doesn’t have to be anything wrong with the spacers or the installation. Moving the wheel out off the hub can bring out otherwise undetected imperfections.

Definitely is tire and wheel related. A vibration between 60-85 mph with a resonance around 72-75 mph is an unbalanced wheel-tire assembly. A noticeable bend in the wheel can increase the effect of an unbalanced wheel-tire assembly. Spacers can produce a vibration if not sitting flush. A spacer must sit fit flush and not allow a single sheet of paper to fit between the two faces of a spacer and the brake rotor mounting face and wheel mounting face. A flat spotted tire can create large vibrations but it goes away as the tire becomes round again. With the wide speed range, I’d say it’s a significantly unbalanced wheel-tire assembly.

I've found these cars are very sensitive to imperfections in wheel mounting.

Removing wheels and spacers, cleaning all the mating surfaces thoroughly, and re-torquing everything down, may solve this high-speed vibration. As mentioned above, removing the spacers completely is also something to diagnose.

I found a hair line crack in my Arc 8’s. Put the stock wheels back on vibration solved.

UPDATE:

If you are having trouble with these symptoms, remove the spacers! I had taken them off and wow, NIGHT AND DAY! I also balanced the wheels and removed the corroding wheel studs. After everything, I didn't know how great the handling feels now!

I haven't been able to get it passed 100 yet to see how much of a difference it will be, but excited and so so happy!

Thank you everyone for the leads and hope any future e9x owners that have these issues that this will help!
