2016 Track(able) Tire Options

Holy cow its Feb already!! Am excited about the new offering to arrive soon. Re71R were the ticket street tires last year (I can swear they are 200 rated R Comps bloody quick).

New for 2016 it appears R888R (R Comps or Semi Slicks) be arriving to the US (rumor has it, they were launched in the UK last year):

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motors...oyo-r888r-tyre
(Demon Tweeks deliver to the US too BTW).

I noticed NT05 (Max Perf Summer) has a 140 UQ rating offering? Meaning NT01 compound or better grip? Anyone tried these and compared to the 200 rating? They do have the 275/35 and 295/35 in 18s (for correct stagger)

http://www.nittotire.com/passenger-t...formance-tire/

Anything else out there?

interested to see how those r888r perform. I thought people didn't like the 'normal' r888.

regarding re71, i'm trying to get multiple feedback from multiple people to get sort of an average of qualitative data - are they really rcomp level grips/wear and are a basically an nt01 disguised as a street tire to be used in 'street' class competition?

thanks!

Good find on the new toyo tires. Kinda pricy for a new intro tire. Like to hear more about it.

I didn't discern much difference between the NT05's and the RE71's I recently tried out on my stock suspension M3. Both work well as dual street with occasional track use. The one issue present with the RE71's was that the edges wore far greater on the passenger side going CCW and caused the car to pull hard to the right. Never had that issue with the NT05's...although I ran the NT05's with -2.3 front camber and -1.7 with the RE71's. So that could have been the issue.

For more of a hardcore track setup the differences might be more acute.

Also looking forward to the new R888's. I currently have them on my 997.2 and they are the only streetable tire able to grip on launch control (0-60's mid 2's all day long) and take an absolute beating at the track on 100+ degree days with zero signs of letting up. They provided terrific feedback when they are close to the limit which I need on my 997 because that car can let go at any moment.

I've been waiting for the NT01 sale to pop but have also seriously considered trying the NT05's. My thinking there is that they might do well in the wet in addition to the dry (not as good at NT01's I know)? Anyone have experience with NT05's in the wet? Potential new compound offering is intriguing also and the price of NT05's can't be beat.

I guess the 140 UTQG NT05's have been around for a bit, track review here:
http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=482213

And then Online Tires has a decent price on them:
https://www.onlinetires.com/search/v...ds/page_2.html

I may pick up a set, still deciding between that and NT01's. If the NT05's are better in the wet such that I can get away with not swapping tires, that may do it for me.

That's a buddy of mine who did the review. I'm coming for you.

Didn't even know the nt05 were this sort of a tire. I've been telling my friend who runs these to get rid of those horrible tires ASAP! Maybe I was wrong lol.

I just ordered a set of 140 UTQG NT05's from OnlineTires, staggered setup. Will post my thoughts after I try them at the track in early April.

I have been using the BFG R1 on the e92 M3. They have been great. Take the weight of the car nicely. Even with stock EDC comp suspension I got even wear across the tire. Now with MCS singles......well I only have 2.5 days on them but would expect to get in the neighborhood of 8 days. I have been able to take the fight to some much lighter/powerful/focused cars on Hoosiers. If you are ready I would recommend the R1.

Are you sure these won't heat cycle out much sooner than 8 days? Where are you sourcing these and at what price?

I think I got 7 days out of the last set before they corded with the stock suspension. Bought them used with 2 heat cycles from a wrecked car. I was able to put down the same times toward the end but I had to commit/lay it out there to make it happen. So hopefully I will get a little more life with stiffer springs + MCS but only time will tell. Whether it is 6, 7 or 8 days it is much better than my friend gets with Yokohama slicks (3 days). My guess/theory is that the Hoosier R7 will wear more like the Yokos. Therefore I feel the R1 is a good HPDE tire. I bought them through my race shop A R Auto Service. Guessing here because I cant remember but probably in the $1200-1300 range. A R is the Yokohama dealer for our area and they are closer to $2000. Fast tire i have used on my E46 M3.

So my NT05's arrived and I now have a stack of tires sitting in my house, love it!

Unfortunately they sent the 200 treadwear 275's by mistake but were quick to provide a return shipping label and estimate when the replacements would ship. This was actually nice though as I had the chance to compare the two compounds side by side. The 140 treadwear tires are slightly softer when pushing hard on them and they also have a shinier finish and smoother texture (perhaps that's unrelated, not sure). Anyway, the compounds do appear to have some differences as one would expect. I also emailed Nitto to see if they might comment on the differences, we'll see.

You just need to order the right part numbers. They're posted on Nitto's website here (the 140 treadwear tires have crosses next to them):
http://www.nittotire.com/passenger-t...formance-tire/

Also, they do cost a bit more than the standard NT05's. Let us know if you get some!

Another observation, only the 140 treadwear tires included this caution label:

BFG-R1 tires are great. Have been using them for years for my 135i and for the last two years on e92m3.
I was getting 10-12 days out of the set on 135i, but that car is about 3300 pounds(slight weight reduction).
Now e92m3 stock weight is a completely different story. After 4 days loss of grip was noticeable and lap times confirmed that.
With Ohlins R&T suspension / camber set at -2.8f, -2.2r, I was getting even wear with plenty of rubber left after 4 days, but I would say about 40% of grip was gone after 4 days. Now all those track miles were on WGI, very demanding road course on tires and I drive 10/10th most of the time.
I hear good reviews about new BFG R1S. According to some of them, these are faster and last as long or longer due to the new r-compound technology used.
I am planning on using them this upcoming season on WGI and will be back with my impression.

Is the 135i really that heavy? A stock E90 M3 is 3600 pounds, just 10% more.

Believe it or not that little car equipped with DCT weighs 3,439 pounds.
DCT is 66pounds more than MT

Thanks! Going to look into these vs. the RE71. It'll probably come down to price since I'm sure both tires will be more than I need.
