Since I have the E46 ZCP wheels my tire size options are 225/255 or 235/265. Neither of which have a lot of great tire options. If I go with the AD08's I will spend $1250 on the tires.

A set of 17x9.5 APEX ARC-8's are $1200 shipped and NT01's are $750 a set. So I save $500 per set of tires so the wheels are paid for in 3 sets of tires. Not to mention the added benefit of having "wet" tires (my PSS's) and keeping my OEM wheels a little nicer. And the reduction in unsprung weight.

If the ARC-8's weren't such a great price and/or I had more tires to pick from I'd be inclined to agree. But the lack of tire selection coupled with the much higher prices makes the wheels worth it to me.
that's fair. 17s must offer a nice price point.

are there any used 17s you can chose from? 1200 is a lot for 17s IMO.

I got my apex for my old m3 for 1100 and they were 18x10

The 17's are $269 a corner. So I figure $1200 shipped which is a tad high; I think they are about $55 shipped from Bimmerworld. So it's actually just a touch over $1100.

Apex prices have crept up a little bit I think as they've gained popularity. But for what they offer I think they are still a great price point.

My instructors have been complimentary of my driving and commented that I feel what the car is doing well.

Again, not trying to say I'm great or even good. I've got miles and miles and hours and hours to log before I would suppose to claim even the title of good.

I think either way the wheels are the right call, but it's probably more a matter of whether I wrap them in NT01's or Hankook RS-3's.

My inclination is to give the NT01's a try, but I'm always open to input.
IMO it's not about speed, it's more about car control skills. If you have car control ingrained in your brain like swatting a mosquito on your arm, then you are ready

Best investment I made was the Apex wheels with tires. I went with RS3 because I bought the set used, but I'm happy with this stepping stone even though I may have been ready for R compounds.

The RS3 I think is a great transition tire, more grip than the Pilots when warmed up, ok traction in the wet on warm days, and you can drive to the track on them. Good wear too.

Are you going sometimes soon?

Post vids!
I too am a proponent of keep the car stock (less tires/pads) until no one else can drive your car faster than you until upgrading various parts.

I'm thinking of buying a camera during the "off season" but don't have one just yet.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

if you want much faster lap times Tires are the way to go! RS3, NT01, or Hankook TDs and you will be crushing your old times.

not01s or ad08s. at only 5 days in i would say ad08s should be sufficient for you. set of arc-8 or ec-7 to go along with it. probably save the nt01 or better upgrade for when you have coilovers as well to take full advantage.

If you are really thinking 17" for track tires, I wonder if you are going to have to run a spacer. I know the sizing isn't the same between an E46 M3 and the R32, but I have an ST40 for my R32, and even with 18" rims, I need a 5" spacer for one rim, and I think 11" for another. With that BBK, you might be better off with an 18" rim. Frankly, I think I'd have just gotten a 19" rim as my track rim, if the selection of 19" R-comps wasn't so bad. Of course, maybe with the E46 M3 sizing, there is enough clearance that a 17" rim isn't an issue.

VW offsets are a lot higher numerically than M cars generally so there is less caliper clearance

Fitment wise the 17x9.5 et35 requires no spacer to clear OE brakes and a 5mm spacer to clear ST40's.

David@ApexWheels was a huge help.

*this applies to the E46 M3

Gotta find more grip! Go with Apex wheels and AD08, RS3, or similar. NT01 if you feel ready.
