Cooling Fans on S/C M3
Any advantage to running an aftermarket cooling fan on a supercharged M3? Like for example Spal or Mishimoto fans?
Our fans are 850watt. Anyone know how many amps they run at and what rom they spin at? Also possibly the cfm? Please chime in. Going to need a new fan soon and am just checking possibilities. I am perfectly ready to buy an OEM fan as well. Just wanted to see if any of these aftermarket fans are an upgrade. ECStunjng has some as does fcpeuro. |

Probably none will fit the radiator core and be fully shrouded to pull air from the entire core as well as the factory fan. Probably few or no aftermarket fans are as powerful, either, if ours is 850W.
What sort of cooling problems are you experiencing and under what conditions? |

Fan works great. I have a small crack in the fan ring. I used epoxy on it temporarily. Even without the epoxy its not audible, but don't want to run it like that. The fan motor and fan itself works great. No cooling issues. I am just planning to replace it OEM, just wanted to get some opinions on those other brands listed on ecs tuning and fcp euro (i.e Spal & Mishimoto). Also anyone know of any OE replacements directly from Siemens-VDO, Valeo, or Mahle-Behr? I am planning to buy the exact BMW fan, but wanted to see if there is an OE replacement available (OEM fan is Siemens I believe) |

I doubt it, partly because we haven’t heard much about it here. It’s common on E46s because they are looking for not just airflow but power by switching to an electric from the factory clutch system.

I don't think the fan does much for you at speed vs the air flow forced through the rad due to velocity. IIRC there was a thread that stated the DME reduces fan load at speed as it is just a wasted parasitic loss.
Could be wrong but none of my old BMW race cars had fans. They were a pain in the pit lane, but never had issues on the track.

True. I just installed it for stop and go driving. Plus I wanted to retain all factory features. Thanks for the input.

You will not be able to install an aftermarket fan that outperforms the OEM unit and retains the factory functions. That's not to say you couldn't spend tens of thousands working with one of the fan manufacturers to engineer a full solution with a proper molded shroud, more powerful fan, DME integration for speed control, etc. Bu that's probably not what you're talking about.
