what would you do?

hi guys, I sometimes get thoughts of changing the M3 for an M6 o GT-R.
I would appreciate if some people who did the change or had either of the two cars could comment on how they are compared to M3. I know the obvious: GT-R is much faster, M6 is faster, and they are both a bit more expensive to maintain. Other than that though, how does the daily drive, interior & comfort compare to the M3 and which do you suggest?

the reason I feel like changing to M6 is: I love the V10 engine, it being high revving N/A, the sound it ridiculous, and I feel like these engines will never be built again by BMW switching to twin turbo's...the time of experiencing this car is now, while there still are some decent ones with low mileage out there. M5 is also a choice but I do prefer a coupe.

the reason for GT-R: it's a damn GT-R...perhaps less sexy than an M3, it's faster & even harder to see on the streets.

what would you do?

a) get nearly new M6 now, and see how next M3 turns out

b) get new GT-R now and forget next M3 (would have to wait a long time before it would be built..)

c) wait up until next M6, M5 and M3 are released and then decide

I've owned an M5, owned several M3s, and driven the M6 at the BMW Performance center. I agree with your assessment of the V10. It is an amazing piece of engineering. However that is about the only thing I like about the M6. My preference in order is;
1. M3
2. M5
3. M6 (long way behing the other 2). The car is more of a GT cruiser than a sports car. Both the M3 and M5 out handle and IMO look much better than the M6.

With that being said, if you like the M6. Now is the time to buy a new one if you are so inclined. You can find amazing deals on new ones on the show floor. My local dealer has a '10 SS coupe which they are listing for $24,000 OFF MSRP. I'm sure a serious buyer could knock another $5k off that.

M6 NO, fugly.

GT-R, Hell yes, instant classic. I see this as a car you see getting a premium on the auction block years from now.

Yeah, 2010 M6's still in the showrooms have amazing deals/incentives right now.

M6 is not fugly. To each his/her own.

The way a lot of people drive M3's, I don't think they'll miss out on any handling edge that M3 has over M6.

OP, just buy whatever you want/like. What ya asking other ppl for?

M6 is probably the cheapest car you can get a V10 engine. And a good one at that too. The only problem M6 has is that it is kinda old technology.. No DCT (if you're into that) etc..

GT-R is cool and everything but the warranty and maintanence cost is an issue. Not to mention turbo engine (I don't like FI). Which, to me, renders the car useless...

I'd go m6.

GTR is full or power and whatnot, but eh, i couldn't justify dropping that much on it. Looks are OK, imo.

M6, and that v10 on the other hand, it just wow. Just starting it up, and hearing all of those cylinders fire, really is something to hear.

I love the M6 and predict it will be more of a collector's item 20 years from now than the E92 M3, going just by numbers if nothing else. I think the 2010 M6 is beautiful (and think the new M6 looks something like a sleek Lexus).

But get the car you want now. Unless you're buying as a collector, follow your driving lust!

The S85 is one of the best (if not the best) engines ever produced by BMW. The noise it makes with exhaust is almost worth it alone!

first thing that comes to my head is "get the M6". I do think the looks are not as sexy as an M3 or even GT-R, and the M6 is a bit vulgar, but with a few cosmetic parts it is an agressive but gorgeous looking car. if it wasnt for the engine though, I'd either keep the M3 or go straight for GT-R, that is why I have my doubts. reason I ask is to see previous owners comment and public opinion on these cars. for now my first option is to get M6 or M5 over the GT-R. I want that damn V10 and GT-R is a much younger car, still time to find a decent one someday.

what do you guys feel about M6 vs M5?

This is what I would do. The S85 is a great engine, but so is the S65. I'd keep until something better comes along. An E6x M5 or M6 is not necessarily the better all around car as compared to an E9x M3.

Once the next generation cars are all out (including the GTR for that matter) you can decide which turbocharged car you want. You can even throw in the C63, including the new coupe, since those will be turbo soon too.

How about...

d) Supercharge your M3, upgrade the exhaust, and breathe new life into it.

V10 or not, you're not going to get M3 handling in any M6. And a few upgrades can give you the boost that'll ensure you'll never be slower than a stock M6.

Or, stuff your E9x M3 with V10 from M5/6.

The M6 is one of the ugliest cars ever created. I would go with option b.

Bunch of BMW homers.

Current 6 series (not sure about new one) is one of the ugliest most ill proportioned BMW's ever. Thing looks like ass.

he's done way to much for me by this point and is officially retired. although I wish it was so, I'd get the M6 and the GT-R and my entire doubt would be solved

It is an option, but if I go the ///M way I'd prefer keeping the engines 100% N/A.

Quote:

that idea I really like, I know Manhart Racing does the swap. but not sure about prices and if it is worth taking half of the car apart.. I'll keep this one in mind though!

perhaps the most sensible thing to do..
I figure if all goes well, by 2012-2013 the new M3,M5 and M6 will be out. Worst case scenario they disappoint, I could still be looking around for 2009/2010 M5/M6 or the updated GT-R.

quite a few negative comments for the M6
Would the handling be solved with a KW? I would not track an M6 and don't expect M3 handling, but would expect a firm and grippy ride for an expensive car like that..

by the looks of it my 2 choices should be M5 vs GT-R

I'd have to disagree, especially the rear 1/2. Perhaps the Z3/Z4, sure.

Huge M5 Powered E92 BMW Burnout

BTW, E9x M3 w/ V10 -> much better power-to-weight ratio than E60 M5 w/ V10, obviously.

I wouldn't care if I could get a new M6 for the same price as a new M3 Coupe. I'd still take the M3 Coupe. I just don't like the looks of the interior or exterior of the M6. I know I'll be in the minority, but I also don't like the sound of the V10.
