Leaking Differential

Hey Guys,

I've noticed a couple times now there's some oil stain the ground around the rear diff area and I finally took a look under the car this weekend. I see some oil leaking around the front of the diff. Looking from the back of the car I don't see any leakage.

Anyone else have this issue? I'm wondering if the warranty i just purchased will cover the repair.

And yes I did a search and didn't find anything related to diff leakage.

Pinion seal. I haven't looked at the E9x procedure specifically, but not typically a big deal. Typically a $20 part, but a bunch of labor to get to. (Have to drop the exhaust and pull the driveshaft. You can generally pull the flange with the diff on the car.)

If your warranty covers drivetrain components, they ought to cover it.

Yeah, I called the warranty company and they said it should be covered.

I have an appointment at the dealer next Monday.

I should still be OK to drive it? I don't see a lot of oil on the ground.

As long as you have not lost enough or are gushing fluid enough to put the diff into a low lubricant scenario, you are fine to drive with a slow steady drip.

So the dealer told me it's the seal at the front where the driveshaft goes. I guess that's the Pinion seal.

Should I have them change the diff fluid while they are doing this? He told me they don't have to drain it. Just top it off but does it make sense to just do it while they are in there? I have around 34K miles on the car.

If it's never changed, it's a good idea. It's a simple procedure of drain and fill. A lot of folks here use redline, takes two bottles

It's fine. If its sweating and you don't see a puddle on the floor of oil, there is plenty of oil still in the unit and very well safe to drive.
Just get to service it as soon as possible.
