Timed start-up vs. start and just go

So, I think I'm not the only one with a weird aberration of the S65 when starting cold and it doing one the following below:

1) If I start and wait about 60-90 seconds and wait to observe the tachometer needle to 'settle' from cold start of approx. 1000 RPM to idle of 750 RPM, then proceed to drive off the throttle is smooth as silk and everything just 'seems' to operate better .

2) If I start up a cold engine and just go, the car 'seems' to be herky-jerky and lurchy . This can be replicated over and over. The throttle will be sketchy and weird until I turn off the engine and restart. Even if the oil temp has got to 210 degrees. the throttle response 'seems' not as smooth versus allowing my imaginary starting sequence of waiting until the tach needle settles to 750 RPM .

Mine drives a little awkwardly in the cold start up phase, but is fine as soon as the idle drops. I generally don’t start the car until I’m ready to go immediately, so mine gets around 1-5 seconds before I drive off.

My 08E90 is like the OP describes. It drives smooth if I warm it up for a minute or two, and is sometimes jerky if I start it up and go.

I always wait for cold start process to warm cats and then drive. No issues when I do this. The couple of times I just started and departed were rough like OP described. It goes away after warm up.

mine is the same as OP, however one thing to add is that if I get distracted and wait too long, which is rare, it's also pretty rough. Better to drive as soon as possible, after cats are warm, after starting from what I have read.

I am not sure it has anything to do with the cats.

Warming up the cats is a primary focus of the cold cycle...

Edit: And as for the original post, I have my cold cycle deleted through coding but will let the car warm up for 20 seconds or so before driving. Keep the RPMs low until engine is warm...

+1 to this. Mine definitely does the whole bucking bronco thing a bit during the cold start, so I have to drive with a pretty significant amount of "finesse" for the first minute or so after starting cold...but I've never had any issues lingering after the cold start sequence is complete, it always smooths out nicely for me.

I literally just mentioned this in another thread on quirks of the E9x M3 haha

Mine operates almost identical to OP. Only happens when cold and immediately drive off w/o waiting for idle to settle a bit. My only exception is that the jerky throttle sensitivity goes away pretty quickly rather than lingering until restart so it's not that bad.

Also this is only for cold start. Warm start everything is butter

I also wait until the cold-start cycle stops.

Doesn't take long and if you attempt to drive off while it's still cycling you're in for a rough ride.

With no cats, you can experience the exact same thing the OP describes. Plus, I think the front 02 provide more input than the post cat O2.

That may be true but OP didn’t indicate he had deleted cats. I was simply explaining why BMW added the cold start cycle.

A good question would be whether catless cars with the cat cold start delete in the tune experience the same thing.

I can answer that.

Due to increased rpm, it feels more sensitive at first but goes away as soon as the cycle is over. Haven't noticed any difference in feel.

Thinking of putting my cats back in because it is way too loud coupled with Eisenmann race backbox and I can't take my car out early in the morning..

Im catless, and I still give it a min or 2, and then take the load a bit easy till it starts building temp.

Nope, the car is 100% stock OEM - the catalytic converters are indeed in place...

Whoa !! Very cool location you're at (Kyoto) do you have any pic's of your neighborhood or surroundings areas ? Taking my family to Japan is definitely on our list of special vacation destinations.

Cheers,

Stock exhaust and I wait for cold start to finish. It’s smoother and I think a 30s easy warm up is good. I wouldn’t go longer than that though, as movement and low RPMs helps everything warm up together.
I also wouldn’t want to wait at all if I were catless. Sounds like a good way to stink up the garage/car/lungs.

I turn the ignition on, wait 5-8 seconds or whenever the ignition gong sound stops, start the car, wait 1 minute to 2 minutes and then drive.

i was debating on that too.. i tried giving it a 1min warm up and that stuff annoys me so i just stick to 3min warmup and still does but not bad as 1min and this this on a 30-40f weather... do you guys happen to grind on 2nd gear on a cold weather? it happens to me as soon as i took off after warm up and as soon as i shift to 2nd it grinds... theres like 50% chance happening to me everytime on a cold weather..it only happens during cold weather
and every cold start morning

I wait until I hear a ticking sound that changes with rpm, then drive off

You got me all nostalgic so I'll post a few.

My late E36 M3C. I was heartbroken when I heard the next owner sold it to junk yard.

Some pics near Shuugakuin..
