Has anybody been running 0w-40 since BE bearings change?

Just did my bearings 5 days ago and switched to 0w-40. Has anybody been running that weight? How is it? Just wondering if I should keep it or switch back to 10w-60?!

I wouldn’t have any doubts except I’m not sure how it operates on high temp comparing to 0w-60. But my reasoning is better lubrication on cold starts and I daily drive it. And plus it’s break-in period so I’m playing it safe

With added clearance, I would not worry so much about a thick oil. In fact, I might worry more about a thin oil. It’s probably fine for a street car, though. Watch your oil temps to see whether it runs hotter in your driving.

BE bearing clearances were designed around the factory 10w60. The only reason I'd suggest swaying from that oil is if you're in a very cold northern climate and need the thinner cold viscosity.

Castrol TWS actually has remarkable cold performance, if you are running that over the new Shell stuff. If you are truly concerned, get an oil pressure gauge and datalog.

That’s exactly what I’m trying to do for next mod. You have link to oil pressure gauge that could fit s65 engines?

As dparm says running TWS should be more than adequate cold flow protection. TWS comes in around 39,300CST in the MRV test at -30C, Shell Helix Ultra/BMW M Twinturbo Power at 35,XXX, Pennzoil Platinum at 33,XXX, Mobil 1 (10w60) <26,XXX, and per Liqui Moly tech support their 10w60's mean number is around 35,XXX inline with the other published numbers. The only reason to go 0w is if you plan on starting your S65 in temperatures below -35C without the aid of a heater.

FWIW after speaking with Shell tech support and reviewing the SDS with them their feeling is that BMW's M Twinturbo Power is the Shell Helix Ultra formula rather than the Pennzoil variety because it doesn't have any GTL in it. The BMW SDS ties to Shell's.

I've changed to Miller's cfs 5w40 nt+ after weeks of research as to what was best for my pride and joy.
when you speak to the oil suppliers they specify 10w60 as they get there info from bmw.
however bmw designed and built this engine with incorrect clearances.thats a lot of time and effort into getting it wrong.
I made my change in the interests of providing better lubrication which is no bad thing.
There will always be debate about which oil to use in these cars and I've based mine on 32 years experience of repairing them .if my engine goes bang I shall post a big red face on here lol

I ran redline 10w-60&0w40 mix (6:3) this time. Had to fill up 1 quart once during 2,200km. Will report back with UOA; I will run straight Redline 0w-40 this time.

Eh, I'm on stock bearings so should be fine

mostly street drive at the moment where temp doesn't get high enough. I'll switch back to 10w-60 after I get my BE bearings.

I use (6) 10-60 and (3) 5-50 Redline cocktail.
3 seasons only; car loves it
