Differential Whine: Fluid or Bearings?
Hey guys, I believe I have a whine from my differential and the recording is here. Any help to identify the root cause is appreciated.
The prior owner claimed to have changed the diff fluid 15K miles ago and upon inspection the diff fluid was dark so that's not a good sign. Thanks! |

That's how my car has sounded since it was new at certain speeds like 40-50mph, especially on coast-down it's always had a little bit of gear whine.
It has 129,000 miles on it now and the diff has never had any problems. The fluid being brown after 15k is normal.

Completely stock. Yeah waiting for the fluid to arrive. Hopefully that solves it. I'm concerned if it's an issue with the gears

Ok I hear it. There is a little bit of diff whine. Check the bushings and see if they were upgraded. Stiffer bushings will cause whine. I would also change the fluid to original fluid and see if that helps.

Try flushing with motul competition 75w-140 2-3 times every 1000-2000 miles. Mine is dead quiet and locks really well after that.

I replace my LSD bearing in last Sept..... the whining noise from a bad bearing is much much much louder than yours. It was so loud that you can't even chat or listen to radio.
