Yes, it does seem to be common.
Mine is doing this on the driver's handle (right hand drive) but works fine on the passenger side. This is consistent with both keys, and I have changed the battery in the key that I normally use (the other one has sat unused since new). When I get into the car, regardless of which door I have used, I get the same "key discharged" icon/warning in the centre of the dash |

Mine started happening right after I picked it up from BMW. I called BMW and they said getting water on the sensor can ruin it. They mentioned they did wash the car before I picked it up so they're going to have a look at it next week.

The car will see a lot of rain during its life. How would water be exposed to sensor? Shouldn't it be waterproof?

^ Agreed. Sounds like a typical BS answer from a service advisor. We have no garage so my car is parked outside 24/7 in a tropical environment with lots of rain and humidity. The CA sensor did fail but that was after almost four year of owner ship. And I would note that most of these failures seem to be on the driver's side where the sensor is seeing much heavier usage than the passenger side...

Really no idea. I had read water damage happen to someone on the forum too. Regardless, I could care less as long as they fix it. Literally was perfect before I brought it in.

this happened to my x5m driver side door 2 months after warranty expired (covered under extended warranty) . this also caused the battery to be replaced as it was causing constant power drain. Dealer ended up replacing both driver and passenger side. then a month later rear driver side door also failed. same thing dealer replaced both sides.
Had battery warning message both times. took a few weeks for the painted parts to come in

I had it fixed, it was the sensor. Unfortunately I was out of warranty, and while my SA told me it would be one price (I can't remember, some sort of deductible r some shit), it actually ended up costing me less then I thought. So it is fixed now, and thank god it works. Its so annoying when it wasn't working.

I was recently quoted about 1000 at my local dealership for this door handle replacement. That's quite a markup because the handle looks like it's a couple hundred bucks. Has anyone gotten this replaced at a local independent shop for a more reasonable amount? Also, does anyone have the part number for the a 2011 E92 driver's side handle?
