I am considering purchasing a M3, and I was wondering if there has been any military memebrs to purchase their M3 through BMW MILITARY and if so was it worth it? Because I have the oppertunity to purchase a M3 through the military program or should I just wait to get back to the States..

DO IT. DO IT NOW... Im not military, but DoD and took advantage of the Mil Sales program in Germany. I saved quite a substantial amount on the price of the car. But there is some stipulation. And I believe the big one is on taxation. You have to have the car overseas 6 months to avoid it. Where are you located? If you are in Germany, talk to the guys at Pentagon Car Sales if you are up in the Ramstein area. I have heard nothing but good things about them. And BMW Military Sales if you in the south as they are in the Ansbach area. Margit Moreau is your Mil Sales rep down there. Thanks for the feedback guys, I am located in Bahrain and I will be here for two years so I was thinking about waiting until my time here comes to the end because with the way people drive around here and the sand everywhere I don't want to take the chance of ruining the car.. But I will deff go with the Military program sounds like great savings.

its a better deal than in the states. plus, if ou ucky you can drive it on the autobahn no speed limit section is 5 minutes away from the dealer.

If you were in Germany, you could buy mine....2008 e92, 22k miles, loaded, DCT, H&R springs, full 3M clearbra, etc etc. I can't even give it away here for $43500. It is going to the dealer for trade in..............so I can pick up my 2012 from Pentagon next week!!!!!

Hey there, I understand your thoughts on why to not have the car while being in Bahrain. With the driving and how they value high end cars, I would probably also hold off for now and order the car before going back to the U.S. One thing to keep in mind is the future change on the M3 and going from V8 to a six cylinder turbo. If you like to have a V8 you would need to order fairly soon and have the car in the U.S. for any vacation time you get there while being in Bahrain. By late summer this year the V8 will stop production and then most likely next year we will get the all new M3 6cylinder model. Guess it all depends on your personal taste in regards to the engine. I'll just say Matt was my SA when I bought my 2011 e90 M3 in Oct/Nov '11 (needed to have the V8) Anyways...Matt is a professional and straight up guy, and NEVER steered me wrong. He helped me make the best decision in my situation and made the purchase zero pressure. If you want to know about the current or future generation M3, he knows EVERYTHING. Even afterwards, he's advised me on various questions and requests whenever I've asked...truely takes care of his customers before and AFTER the sale. I'd highly recommend him to anyone. I didn't buy my M3 through BMW military sales, but I did buy the 335i that way in '08. I brought the invoice with all the options I wanted to a dealership stateside and the sales rep said he could get within a grand of that price, but a grand's a grand, so order it through military sales and have it sent to that dealership. Ordering and delivery went off without a hitch. I picked it up at that stateside dealership when I PCS'd back from Korea and they presented the car as if I had purchased it there.

The tax break depends on the state unless you have it overseas for a period of time. I had mine built and shipped direct to FL, so I had to pay FL sales tax.

It's a good deal, but the tax when you bring it back to the states will get you.

Be aware, it is different for every single state. Some people can avoid the sales/use tax completely when they ship the car back, but some can't. There's no specific amount of time either. Some states require you own the car for 12 months, some 6, some it doesn't matter at all. I'm 100% serious on this. Please do the research on your DMV website where ever you are planning to register the car when you get back.

So you know, I tried every avenue to avoid it. Basically I had two options, either register the car at my home of record (Phila, PA) or register it where my orders were taking me (VA). Both states had laws that said no matter how old the car was, I would pay a tax on registering it. If it was older than 6 months in VA, I'd pay the tax based on the current value. If I was older than 12 months in PA, I'd pay the tax based on the current value. If it was younger than either of those in the respective state, I'd pay the tax on what was on the Bill of Sale. My car was only 4 months old, so my decision came down to which state had the higher tax rate. PA was 8% and VA was 3%... I think I paid a little over $2k in taxes.

In some states, there's absolutely nothing you can do to avoid it. I tried JAG, I tried every legal loophole I thought I could find, but there were none. While I agree it's a load of crap, there's nothing you can do.

If you have questions on the tax process, let me know. My advice would be to do the research, figure out how much you might pay (if anything) and then save that money. I've gotten into many arguments with people on this, so once again for the illiterate IT VARIES BY STATE, YOU MAY NOT HAVE TO PAY TAXES.

Just thought about this, and not sure if it's possible, but what is the likelihood that a service member can buy the vehicle, put it in a garage or something similar so it doesn't get touched, then bring it back to the States, and sell it to a civilian? Just wondering about a possible future business deal

The two states I have to choose from is Connecticut and South Carolina, I know Ct is ridiculous with taxes so I think my best option would be with SC. But I will deff look into the exact numbers before making my decision.

Why not just register it in Florida? They have a great tax program (like zero) for cars if you don't drive it in the state for the first six months.

I can also have it sent to Fl, since I do have family members that live in Florida. Again I would have to look into all the details in each state but I greatly appreciate the feedback from everybody. Im really not trying to have the car in bahrain for 6 months

A fully loaded one will run right at $65k (without extended leather). It is about $7500 off MSRP and then a little more off depending on options. You can get a no option 2011 left over for right at $50k.
