I think....we all need to wait !
And when they are there, the new ( ///M3 - ///M4 ) whe have something to compare ! And after a test-drive with these new ones whe can hear and feel something to compare, and than whe can talk again ! Wat i want to say is...now we can not compare...with what ??? With something that is not there ??? So...my conclusion is...wait and see |

I really like the uniqueness the S65 engine has. The sound, the high redline etc... Its like the M division car was so much different that the 328i/335i, hell all other models. Really made the car special. The 328i was N/A 6, the 335i is TT 6. which they were kind of the same engine. but one had 70HP over the other. both kind of sounded the same also. And looked the same also. Same thing with the old V10 M5 and the 5 series. The M5 was total different. Now that every engine is going turbo and smaller i feel it might take away that unique feel to the M engines. A BMW inline 6 is going to sound like a BMW inline 6. rather its in a 335i or a 1M. I am not a fan of the way BMW is going, but i completely understand why they have to go that way. |

I am not sure if I agree.

Want another example? How about the e36, which had the S50, which coincidentally was also based on the M50. So, having a very unique engine like the S65 (and the S85) is not a historic norm for M cars by any stretch of imagination. Quote:
That's not to say that I don't want to see a beefy V8 under the hood. In fact, I do. And that's the reason why I getting one of the last e92 M3s (late May build). The concern I have with the new M3/M4 isn't the engine choice, but the overall package. How will the EPS feel, for example. Will it be more isolated (which seems to be direction all the new BMWs are taking, including the new M5)? Will the rumored weight reduction materialize? Too many unknowns at the moment. |

A true M3 only has a 4 cylinder engine.
A true M3 only has the proper Euro inline 6, not the detuned one the US got. A true M3 only has the proper inline from the E46. And now, a true M3 only has the V8? How about, a true M3 is the one you bought and love. Coupe, vert or sedan. 6mt or DCT. If anything I will miss the classic steering feel over the EPS units, but things change and the M3 has changed over time-- a lot. |

There are many interesting comments in this thread. My guess is that twenty or twenty five years from now will the grand kid that's a noob car enthusiast be more interested in seeing, hearing, driving one of BMW's first generation turdbro M3/M4 or the last of the naturally aspirated screaming variety? Grand kid: Pops, why didn't you keep that V8?

I have wanted every version of the M3 since the 80's, each one of them has their own special character as a package. This car however is different, and IMHO the perfect collision of many factors that make this engine one for the ages. Derived from the BMW S85 V10 engine used in the M5/M6, it shares the same basic architecture and aluminium construction. It was introduced in the E92 M3 and was chosen as International Engine of the Year for the 3.0 to 4.0 L category in 2008, 2009, 2010,[1] 2011, and 2012. It remains to be seen if the new blown I6 will have such honors bestowed upon it.

I'm not sure I'll care when I dont have to rev the balls off the engine to get any power out of it. I definitely need some torque in my life. |

Maybe they're more concerned with what's in the back (e.g. VW Beetle).

With the next generation's coupe having M4 on the back end, it's a moot point.

I just hope, for the love of all things holy, that kid actually has the desire to drive a car.
I've been seeing a lot of press about the current generation coming of legal driving age not being that interested in getting their license or owning a car of their own, not to mention all this self-driving car technology. What's the world coming to? I guess as long at there are Hot Wheels, there will be little gearheads in training.

If it's as tuneable as the GTR motor then it definitely will be.
