Yes. PM for details. I don't have any information whether the issue is a problem or "normal" but let's just say I am waiting for an 09.

bummer. i feel for you after spending that much money on a car and then something out of your control kind of takes away from it. I guess the best you can do is enjoy the car and know that you got a fresh motor. It will hurt the resale.

Sounds like some dealers are less willing to look into the issue than others. But if this is a real issue, we should get to the bottom of it. And that can only be done by having the BMW of NA FSE hear the sound.
+ 1 I just reached 15,000 Miles and the engine has started making this sound!
They have had the vehicle for 2 days and have not been able to figure out whats causing it?

Please someone provide any updates on this issue, as it seems quite a few of us are affected by it!

Actually a better tact in this is that you want matching serial numbers with the new engine. Yes the engine compartment gets torn down but thats not really a huge deal (unless the dealer service sux). If you demand a matching serial number with the engine, its a long shot but could lead to BMW sending you a new car. This would also put the car in for easily 30 days, get you past the new car mark. You might want to go straight to BMW Germany with this, and skip the middle man with BMW NA. You'll probably get much farther. The dealer will just sell you're current car as a demo.

Unless your engine makes this sound:

It's probably normal. Even though this engine has hydraulic valve lash adjusters, its valvetrain is quite loud at idle compared to other V8s. The hybrid gear-driven cam drive is 'whiney' too, but it gives the engine 'character', and sounds great IMO. You can tell when a noise is normal. A noise like the video, unrelated to rpm, is something to worry about for sure. Take care.

This thread got me a little concerned, so I shot this quick video of my car. Car stats: '09 M3, 19k miles, DCT, modded from 4k miles to current. What do you guys think? JC, I'd certainly appreciate your input .

My e30 M3 engine blew with 1000 miles

It was one of the 1st e30s delivered and I decided to "chip it" with a Dinan chip. When it blew I was sweating bullets--thinking the warranty was likely voided. I was upfront with the dealer about the chip, and it turned out it wasn't an issue. However, BMW wanted to replace the engine with a rebuilt engine--not sure where they would have gotten a rebuilt engine for a newly released model. In any event, I held out for a new car because I was concerned about resale among other issues and BMW came thru. I did have to wait 3 months for it to be delivered, but had a loaner for the duration. They shipped the engine back to Germany to try to figure out what went wrong--I think they ultimately determined that there were metal fragments in the engine from a defective oil pump.

What you described sounds exactly what my 2004 E46 M3 (outside of the bearing recall period) sounded like when it spun a rod bearing. At the end of the day they replaced the entire motor with a new motor shipped over directly from BMW AG.

Other than the three week wait, it really wasn't that big of a deal. You just need to break-in the new engine following the same procedures and then you will be good-to-go.

Also, be sure that you get an oil change on the new engine at 1,200 miles. If you have the dealership do the oil change make sure they agree to it in advance and they don't inadvertently reset your service indicator on the car based on that unplanned oil change.

Oh my god....please tell me that you're kidding . Are you really implying that a tune has caused havoc on the bottom-end of my engine? Really?

I have seen a lot of blown engines in my day (probably over 100 different cases) on cars ranging from Evo X's to Porsche 996tt's. I have NEVER, let me say this again....NEVER come across a tune that caused bad main bearings or any type of crankshaft damage. Broken rings? Sure. Shattered connecting rods? A few. Bad main bearings? Please!

My only reason for concern is the fact that my dealership failed to completely fasten my oil filler cap, and the car blew over a quart of oil out before I even knew what happened .

I think that most of you are jumping the gun. Ask for a new car and see what happens. Their answer might surprise you (in a good way).
