if your car is still under warranty, it will be covered. Just take it to the dealer.

Earl - we all speak English but it appears there are some distinct regional differences showing their head here, to comedic effect. No harm intended I'm sure.
That looks like a catastrophic failure waiting to happen there, so its good you caught it when you did. Thank you for reporting it to the forum. |

The shock absorber is covered by the warranty. I had it booked in to the dealer today, alas Car is still off the road, after sitting at the dealer all day they tell me "we ordered the wrong shock absorber", I suspect they ordered a non EDC one. I was pushing them to change both sides but they wont wear it because the car has such low mileage. The bad news is it will be at least a week as the part needed is on back order from Germany.

Just one shock? I would push for a matched pair of shocks.

Absolutely true.
+1.
Why the hell wouldn't they just replace both? Seems like it would be ultimately more work for them if the other side (heaven forbid) were to crack and they had to replace it too.

My rear shock is cracked in exactly the same place!!
I've had exactly the same problem with the rear shock. I've had a clunking in the rear drivers side for past 2 months. I've replaced top shock mounts without success. Then replaced top control arm which cost £154 as there was slight movement in one of the bushes. Still no success. Then I noticed the crack at the bottom of the shock exactly the same as this one. My car is 08 and is out of warranty so it was a £400 bill as my car has EDC. Obviously a design flaw. Hopefully I won't need the other shock to balance things up. My car has 36k done. Fitting tomorrow. Fingers crossed!
Very difficult to diagnose as once the car was on the lift or jack the load goes on the shock and everything tightens up. However after driving the car if you can manage to get in under and get a hand to the shock, it is alarming how much movement there is. Quite worrying. Edward. |

Fitted and fixed
Got the shock fitted yesterday. Fairly straight forward. Had to remove side panel in boot to get at top nut and also bolt at bottom of shock which was tight but plenty of WD40 ensured it did not ring off. Rattle is now gone and car is handling as it should again.
My shock is exactly the same as the pic at the top of this thread. Same crack in same place. How can I describe the rattle? It's a clunking noise which occurs occasionally to start with and then gets worse. At the end I had it with every bump on the road. I knew it had to be related to the shock. It's as if something is rumbling about in the trunk. You'll know quite easily if you have the same problem - light up the bottom of the shock - you will clearly see any cracks - it's open and accessible. My car seems fairly well balanced, though I may replace the other side in time. By the way BMW also told me I'd need an adaptor kit for the EDC connection - £30 - I didn't need this - hopefully they will take it back. |

I'm starting to think this is a failure of the part not from bad driving or wear and tear but because its a faulty designed part. I also just discovered my right rear shock strut has the same crack. Will take pictures this weekend when I remove it and install the new one. I had to pay out of pocket as my extended USAA warranty won't cover it. They said its a wear item. Bastards! My tech rep does a very good job of wording the reports and takes good care of my service needs. But in this case was not able to convince the Extended warranty department.
So back to the shock absorber. The shocks should not ever crack or fail in that area. Leaking perhaps or run out of fluid over thousands and thousands of miles with the years as all old shocks do but not crack near the bolt head. I wonder if anyone has tried to report this to BMW and see if BMW will provide replacements due to faulty engineering?? RB |
