I just had Ohlins Road and Track installed in my M3 and absolutely love it. *IF* you think stock car has too much body roll and feels a touch too lazy/ponderous, I would recommend this extremely highly. Ohlins makes M3 fully competitive with my Bilstein Turbo in "fun factor" and now hugs corners as if on rails. It TRANSFORMS the feel of the car. Pictures below.

I did not want to lower car too much so it is set at roughly 1/2 inch from stock (stock 36.5 ground to mid fender, mine is 36). Height is of course adjustable but you don't want to lower much below 1 inch from stock anyway. The picture post Ohlins shows the stance (sorry no close up), really not much different. Damper settings allow adjustment of firmness/comfort to your taste. I live in a mountainous area so mine is on the semi aggressive side.

I wrote about settings and more detailed impression, and "functionality" of "Automatic" Damptronic versus "Manual" Ohlins in last few pages of M3 thread in my signature.

I would consider ohlins but the cost and frequency of rebuild service makes me hesitate.

Just curious, what's your expectation on life of coilovers?

No aftermarket coilover setup will come even remotely close to the service life of OEM struts and springs.

KW makes systems specifically for convertible with the correct spring rates. We also like the Sachs Performance system which is fantastic for street M3's.

MHO: Smart companies would always give conservative service estimates for self protection against liability/warranty claim. WRT to "life expectancy," I expect no less from Ohlins than from my Bilstein Damptronic, or from other reputable companies like KW, etc.

In *general*, the recommendation for suspension is inspection (not necessarily rebuild work at all) around every 40,000 miles. You don't just send coilover in for rebuild if car is behaving as expected. Whether yours needs work very much depends on how and where you drive. Track work will need closer inspection, going through large street bumps without slowing down (one of the worst things you could do) shortens life, etc. Regular street driving with common sense: just a guess, but I would expect nothing less than 50,000 miles.

Nothing will beat stock for reliability, but this is nothing new, not just for suspension, but for just about any after-market mod you want to do. It comes down to personal preference, no right or wrong: if the car feels good as is, don't touch it - can never match stock's reliability, but if car feels too soft/ponderous and steering too lazy, you don't have much of a choice. And once you have decided on a reputable company, I doubt there is proven evidence that one will be "better" than another in terms of how often you have to check or rebuild. The Ohlins Road and Track is a "moderate" coil-over mod (as opposed to track oriented ones for track work for example), I am expecting a long life span out of it. Hope this helps.

I have KWV2's now for my E93 (which you've worked on, Dean ), and they need to be replaced (it's been 50,000+ miles, so I'm overdue). And I didn't know that KW made coils specifically for the convertible. Do you have a link for them?

Upgrading the suspension is new to me so I don't know what to expect. I have been thinking about it though as I find the e90 ZCP M3 suspension on street with 75k miles a bit ponderous compared to my M2 with 35k miles. It's my biggest issue with the car. Maybe the stock components just need to be replaced with new.

The only other thing I would want is the oil to warm up faster so I can have fun sooner!

I just installed KW Clubsports in my e90, completely transformed the car and still easily drive-able on the road daily if needed.
