German Engineering Saved My Life: E92 M3

As a longtime BMW fan I've always dreamed of having an M3. When the e92 m3 first came out I knew that If I worked hard enough someday I would own it.

I looked for months and months and finally found a clean one owner Jerez Black M3 with basically every option possible. Made the arrangements and went to go pick up the car in Kansas and drove it back 1,500 miles to southern California.

Last night (Two days after I got back) I was out seeing a movie with a friend and took the car out to show him. On the way back I took a road I drove 1000 times before, a fun road with some twists and nice straight aways. Accelerating down a straight I felt a sudden pop come from my driver rear tire and found myself spinning towards the other lane. I counter steered which put me in the other direction away from oncoming traffic but I was too far gone and ended up impacting a chain link retaining fence the kind of reinforced fence that holds up large boulders from falling into the roadway. I hit the reinforcement pole head on. All I remember was going slightly airborne and just thinking I was going to flip, luckily I did not. All the airbags deployed and I ended up about 100 feet from first impact in one piece. I crawled out of the passenger side door and called 911. I was just in shock of what had happened.

I use to race shifter karts for many years and never experienced anything like that. I wasn't even sure what caused me to lose control so suddenly. I looked at the car and just started to tear up, here I am with my dream car and three days later it is totaled. I'm extremely thankful to be alive and can honestly say with the force I impacted that If I was in another car I would have been seriously injured or dead. It was so strong that it ripped the pole and 4 feet deep of concrete foundation out of the ground, and my car took 6 inch deep chunks out of the asphalt. The paramedics were amazed I was able to walk around such a major accident.

I walked away from that accident with a few bumps and bruises and I am simply just amazed and grateful to be alive.

Thank you BMW for all the engineering you put into these cars to keep us safe. I will never buy another car. After the accident all the interior lights and electronics were fully functional and the interior wasn't push in or damaged at all. I even called 911 from my bluetooth in the car.

The car is a total loss unfortunately and It hurts me to have killed off such an amazing car. But Im grateful to be alive!! Thought I would share how safe these cars really are, drive safe everyone.

Oh my, I'm at a loss for words. An accident like that sucks big time but I can't even imagine it happening 3 days into the ownership. But just like you said, the most important thing is you are fine and you will be back in another M3 in no time!

And lastly, great to see how strong these cars are at keeping us safe. I've seen worse looking accidents and drivers walked away.

That's a sad story with a good ending. Glad you walked away.

Any thoughts on cause of the tire blowing? Not a frequent occurrence.

Good to hear you're ok.

The worst part about this is trying to find an unmolested replacement.

All modern cars are very safe. You'd have walked away in the same fashion in a many other cars. I can attest to the safety of the E92. Rolled one once and I think the worst damage was that my hair was sort of messed up and my tie was crooked when I crawled out of the car window. Good thing was that I was able to quickly get into one of the remaining last new ZCP coupes.

Glad you are ok and sorry to hear about another one hitting the graveyard. You'll be back in no time.

wow It's good that you are grateful for being alive, and could share this story. Thanks for posting we sometimes need to be reminded of the danger. I am glad you are ok.
I think it was not a head on crash, the back of the car was probably off center.

Did you have DTC turned off ? probably didn't matter if that tire blew.
Am I right that if you had not counter steered the car would have ended in the green on the other side with mostly cosmetic damage ?
