Stoptech/Centric Reman Caliper Review

My car is hitting 130K miles and I was debating if I should rebuild it or get some BBK. The car is a DD mostly.. So I picked the rebuild route. After putting together the rebuild material list...

Holy cow, it's close to $100 per caliper for new guide pins, rubber, seal and boot etc.. Also, the boot freaking fused to the caliper!!

So I kinda start looking around for readily rebuilt ones.... Looks like the GM folks got some good experience with Centric's rebuild vs the other companies. So I pulled the trigger at Rockauto for this whole set... Also somehow they got it really cheap.. like $50 per caliper cheap with core returned..

Anyways.. here's just my finding if anyone wants to go the same route.

In general.. I give them 8/10.. decent rebuilt. the bleed screws, boots, rubber and pin all look new (that's already ~$50 without labor cost)
The painted, fully loaded looks nicer than the semis.. I'll probably get the rears painted as well to match and prevent rusting.
I have concern about them over torquing and potentially damaged guide pins. I will probably see how much torque to actually put on and go from there.

Part numbers:
Centric RL 14134593 (141.34593)
Centric RR 14134594 (141.34594)
Centric FL 14234204 (142.34204)
Centric FR 14234203 (142.34203)

The front ones are loaded with pads. Will include and show later. The rears is pretty much limited to 1 selection.

Now the fronts.. (yes, I got the red ones )

Overall (re)build quality seems ok.

the other side

came with 2 very horribly sat pads

The guide pins are actually locktited.. with Red!!.. it is a pita to remove.. also suspect they just impacted them in, with Torx not hex (one of the pin has torx mark)

really dirty in there.. mostly grease

the pads came with

They are 105.09180 >> APC/Stoptech page https://www.apcautotech.com/part-det...e=bmw&model=m3

they are actually ceramic pads (let me know if anyone wants them. I have a set of Akebono to go in already)

taken the pin off (some locktite or just paint)

the other side looks clean

Imperfection for sure. already sctraching

The other side

Piston area.. some scratches.. probably from removal.. well

Bracket slot looks a bit rusty ish

The guide pins cleaned up a bit.. looks new.. or at least not in bad shape.. Might still replace them though

Banana phone.. the 3 pin looks like torx-ed.. or over impacted. Not sure if I want to take chance with it. Not going to be fun if it strips in place

The piston looks really clean though

boot gap..

Now we go to the rear... look ok but not painted.

a tint of red...hmmmm

the other side

not bad in general

these damn pins also get really tight in there.

piston not looking as good as the fronts

close up on boots

another close up

for reference.. this is how much if I was to source and rebuild on my own

I think they look great and that the price was excellent. I ran a set of centric rebuilds on my E36M3 for about 5 years before changing to Stoptech 4 piston (which I always wanted because they look cool, but they don’t stop any better in non-track use). The centric paint faded pretty fast — it was not a fancy two part high temp ceramic, at least not when I got the rebuild done 10 years ago.

Your shopping list would also have needed paint. And about a day of your time, whatever that is worth.

Good to know about the paint. For the price, I don't mind sanding it off some day and repaint them properly. they will probably be covered in brake dust first lol.

still waiting on the last piece to arrive and we will see how they go into my car and actual feeling

I bought a set of steel lines to replace the rubber too

Beautiful work. For street use, these one piston floaters are OK.
