you guys either all got A's in home-ec or this is much harder than you are all making it seem. there is way too much material on the f10 knob boot for it to snap in without doing some serious trimming and glueing. i'm about to give up and cut the knob off, this is ridiculous. I can't get the corners to look right

I've failed at this twice now. Ugh. First time, I spilled superglue on the leather. This time, I broke my plastic ring trying to to get it back on.

Over it. 240 bucks down the drain. Oh well, lesson learned.

Just finished installing mine tonight. This thread has been a big help from start to finish. Thanks to all that contributed!

My experiences:
1. Wear gloves to get a good grip on the stock shift knob to remove it, that really helped me out since that SOB is in there good!
2. I had a difficult time removing the stock base ring from the stock boot, it's really glued in there! Just be patient, once you get enough off the rest seems to come off easier.
3. I didn't glue the M5 Boot to the stock base ring, just need to cut big enough holes around the clips so they can clip in freely.
4. A second pair of hands helped me a lot when performing the final installation. Luckily my wife was game to help me out tonight (thank you baby Jesus! lol). The second pair of hands came in handy when keeping the leather tucked in cleanly and making sure all the clips were securely clipped in tight. If you did this correctly, the base shouldn't pop off without a nice tug like the initial removal.

It's definitely a lower height than stock, but I like it...I can still rest my arm on the armrest and shift no problem. The shifting feels amazing with the heavier knob. 1st to 2nd is definitely improved for me.

Just thought I'd share my personal experiences and opinions, hopefully it'll help some of you out. Thanks again for this thread! Cheers!

When you switch knobs, where do you cut the M5 and M3 leather on the boots. Then, once its cut, do you just switch them or is there something else that needs to be done (except for the wiring). Thanks.

Late to the party here, but I just got mine done by an upholstery shop for $20. Took the rings off myself before bringing it in and it only took them 15 min. Snapped in with no issues and leather is tight all around. Thought I'd let everyone know another option for those of you not so good at these sorts of DIYs like myself.

I just did mine today. It took me a little over an hour and it wasn't hard at all. A bit tedious at times, but nothing crazy. I almost punched myself in the eye, but lucky I wasn't using too much force so I was able to stop myself just before impact.

I didn't use a single drop of glue, I lined up the leather boot with the ring and held it in place with fat paperclips. I then cut slits where the 4-tabs are and slid the tabs into the slits.

Then I just stuck it back into place and everything is holding fine.

There is definitely an improvement over the stock shift knob. I wouldn't say the difference is night and day, but it's definitely noticeable and improved.

Many thanks to everyone in this thread who contributed to the write-ups, it really made my life easier and saved me a lot of time!

Cheers!

just did this... didn't trim the excess leather.... seems to have clipped in okay (will know forsure in due time). Engagement feels much more precise.

EDIT: 400 miles on this and have 0 issues. Car finally shifts how it should have out of the factory

Anyone find it a reach?

This is a great thread! I have found the shifter in this car to be the one thing that I don't particularily enjoy and would love to make this change.

I know the F10 knob sits a wee bit lower than that of the stock knob. Does anyone find the shorter knob to be a bit of a reach in the 4-5 or 5-6 positions?

I'm not the tallest of individuals and wondered if anyone had a negative experience with that aspect?

Checked through the thread but wanted to make sure...can you buy the knob separate? Or do you need to get it with the full boot?
