Engine Fan Running After Engine Off
Hello
Just a quick question - ran my e92 m3 today and noticed my engine fan ran for a while after the engine was off (for around 6ish mins) Now I haven't noticed this before. So was just wondering if this is normal?? Thanks, Redmond |

Normal, apparently it happens only when the coolant temp gets above a certain level. First time this happened I stood in front of the car, waiting and thinking it wouldn’t shut off and was going to drain my battery, lol

That's exactly what I was thinking! Just seemed weird as the car had been idling only for only around 3 mins and the fan decides to stay on for much longer

Yeah it runs for a long time, for me it usually happens after spirited runs. Make sure your coolant is topped up. It shouldn't come on after only 3 mins of idling

Will give it a check. Might be because I kept turning the engine off and on and it was in my garage so not great air flow

- It generally happens when you idle the car, turn it off, then start the car again and shut it off again. Then the fan starts up and will not turn off when you shut off the engine. The fan does shut itself off after sometime, but surely it shouldn't be running in the first place given the outside an engine temperature?! |

It happens on random occasions. It seems that the car has a default time for the running fan if the temp gets above a certain degree. It is normal.

I live in the desert and even when temps reach 115 my fan almost never stays on after I shut the car off. 116000 miles on it.
Something the forum is discovering is that tight rod bearing create heat. |

Wow talk drawing wild inferences. How about if the OP checks the coolant level first? Low coolant level will cause the coolant temp to spike, which may explain why his fan is kicking on or it could be an electronic glitch.

You guys are something else. Yes, OP this is normal as stated. I live in FL and mine sometimes runs for minutes after the car is turned off and sometimes doesn't. This isn't a feature exclusive to BMW cars either. It seems like everyone hear looks for problems

The op is correct and so is the post above. Run on is normal if engine is hot.
Also the fan will continue to run in as situation where you have run for a bit, off, on, off situation (say if on leaving the car you realise you c****ed up your parking and had to redo it) |

Mine did this once
I've literally only heard my 2009 M3 do this once. Normal. A dealer tech confirmed it .... Asked him afterwards.
What is weird is I never heard my twin turbo 335i do this. I guess it has an electric cooling pump that can stay on after car is off. M3 runs the fan instead. |

Yup.... I park my M in a storage unit and swap cars. It happens when I restart the M while hot sometimes. Pull up, turn of M. (no fan running) Pull out the beater BMW. Pull my M in the unit (30 ft.) and shut down the motor and the fan will keep running. Since I put a E9x presentation cover on my M I leave the front grills uncovered. Seems odd but it is what it is.

This feature is a good thing....it allows the engine to cool down properly. I've heard it after spirited driving or heavy traffic with not a lot of airflow and hot/humid weather, nothing to worry about.
