Dealer to fix rattle..........
I have my car booked into the dealer next week to look for the cause of my rattle under warranty.
I am the only person on this forum to experience this particular rattle; it's not really a rattle, more a sound like someone hitting a cymbal - coming from my door I think. Anyway, it's not possible to reproduce this annoying thing at will; it happens in an ad-hoc fashion, sometimes when going over a rough surface. A lot of threads seem to warn that the likely outcome will not be happy for me and I certainly agree that the car should spend the minimum possible time at the dealer, especially when I'm not there to keep an eye on things. Am I being too pessimistic or should I cancel the appointment and try to investigate the issue myself (ie remove the door trim and take a lok inside)? |

If your expectations are set reasonable, which would be that there is a really good chance they will not be able to duplicate it then I would bring it in, and you wont be as upset when they do not find an issue. You never know you might get lucky and they fix it, but if nothing else it is now on record that you have complained about this issue and in the end if there is ever a real issue it is all about documentation. I also would not suggest you start to take things apart until after the dealer can't fix it. If you do, and you can't fix it and they see any evidence of you taking stuff apart there is a much lesser chance of them being willing to work with you to resolve the problem under warranty and can/may claim the problem was caused by you taking something apart yourself. Just my opinion, take it for what it is worth....... maybe $.01

Do yourself a favor and have someone drive the car with you to reproduce the complaint. (at the dealer)
Squeak and rattles are sometimes hard to reproduce. Can't fix something you can't reproduce right? I'm a BMW tech by the way.

no, do take it in. I would not let up to find what the rattle is about.
Remind me of a funny story. Some man had a Cadi; kept on hearing a clunk coming from the door. Took it in for service. The SA called the customer to the back. Took the door panel out, and showed him where the clunk was coming from: someone at the factory tied a quarter to a fishing line, and left it hanging inside the door panel with a note:"Haha, if you have found this, that means the joke is on you".
