outie hood dent....

so when i went to pick up my car there was a small outward dent on my hood; like something dented it from the inside. The area below the dent was covered by a brace so I am assuming there is an upward rivet there. The paintless dent guy fix it and he said it could have happend when someone slammed the hood closed. He said aluminum hoods are prone to dent. Just an FYI.

it was a very, very small upward dent. you could actually only see it when the sun hit the hood. it was about 10 inches to the right of the bmw emblem. there must be someting (rivet, weld, etc) under that section of the hood covered by the bracket on the underside.

Maybe something (tools) was left inside the engine compartment when they closed it.

nope, couldn't be a tool. the mark was between the brace and the hood. a tool would have hit the brace not hood. there must be something between the brace and the hood. i will post a pic monday of the exact area but if you lift your hood you will see the hood bracket i am talking about.

My car's bonnet (hood) also has an outward dent. It's quite big, so big that you can even see it when you're behind the wheel!

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Strange. It sounds like maybe the rubber bumpers on the hood weren't adjusted right from pdc causing the hood to sit too low? Could be a possibility. You should check it out before the same thing happens again.

I also just noticed an outward dent a little up and to the right of the BMW emblem. It's under the brace so you can't see what caused it. It's very irritating for a car with under 200 miles.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I've always pushed it close with my hands right above the bracket(s). On many of my cars with aluminum hoods, you can't close it by letting it drop due to the hydraulic shocks preventing it to hit with enough force.

I always adjust the hood perfectly for alignment and closing force. It's very easy on the M3; just remove the plastic 'screw' from the brackets and they screw in and out for adjustment. And don't forget about the rubber stops; they screw in and out too. Having said that, the M3 was perfect from the factory, so didn't have to touch it. Also need to add that the M3 having TWO brackets, you need to make sure both close with the same force. If not, adjust one so the hood doesn't 'pop up' on one side. Good day.

I have the outie dent on my hood also when I got my car at the exact same place you described. Very hard to notice it except looking direct sunlight. I checked under the hood but couldn't find anything that can cause this. Applied clear bra on the hood but if I can catch the correct angle I think I can take a photo.

I have the same dent. I noticed it after my track day at Pueblo but it could have always been there.

since so many guys have it, maybe it's part of the "mold"
I remember a prior post where all the guys with a certain build date range had this small deformity on their front bumpers.

As I can't take any pictures right now, I researched some old ones and you can see it in the delivery pictures. It must have happened during manufacturing, delivery, or dealer prep. If you focus on the emblem and scan to the right about 2 in. and up 1 in. you'll see a tiny dimple. I know it's insignificant, but was still suprised to see it on a car with 200 miles. I have to check the latching etc as I don't want it getting any worse!!
FYI My car was delivered in Aug 08.

Weird - I've got this in nearly the exact same spot! Wife noticed it before pick up, dealer had no idea where it had come from and we let it go figuring we could get it fixed easily. I've put off the paintless dent removal visit, but will make it soon!

What could be causing this on so many cars? Disgruntled German with a ball peen hammer?
