Trunk won’t open. Yes, tried that hidden valet thing

Hey. First snow fall in Canada and this weird thing happened. I opened the trunk to put my daughter’s birthday cake in there. Get home and the trunk won’t open. Can’t get the cake out. Well, good thing there’s a proper old school key so unlocked and got the cake out.

It won’t unlock through the FOB or through the quick release by the dead pedal.

Searched and searched. I tried the valet lock/unlock thing (as below) but to no luck.

What are the next steps here? Other than the obvious one to take it in??

Check the wires going to the trunk lid. The insulation gets brittle and cracks eventually breaking the wire. I had a similar problem. Fixed it temporarily with a crimped connection. Later I soldered in a longer section of wire to replace the section that runs through the rubber 'flex' section.

Silly question but did you hit the trunk lock by accident in the glove box? Also there is a green glowing triangle on the trunk lid underside that is cable driven directly to the lock. This will open it for sure. Check fuses as it sounds like an electrical issue.

Recap. Not sure what it is. The trunk opened the next day and hasn’t given issue since.

Any issues with the seals for the wire loom that runs to the trunk? You mentioned it was after a snow which might have meant that excessive condensation was building up inside the trunk causing something to short. You could try popping off the tabs to the trunk liner and looking inside to see if anything looks frayed/corroded or exposed? Also check the rubber grommets that run from the trunk to the back of the car on the right side. The rear window seals on these cars are shit so if yours has been leaking it's also possible moisture was building up.
