Royal Steering Wheels in the UK do great work for custom retrimmed steering wheels.

Thanks for the great write-up. I’ve been looking for a quality, customised wheel and this could just be it for me!

I'd be curious to hear how well the heated function works after the re-wrap. In the winter, a heated steering wheel is a Godsend on my 328i and I've yet to find a re-upholster service that retains the heated element of the original wheel.

I highly recommend Mike at cobywheel.com

I have 2 of his wheels on my old E46 M3, an OEM Performance wheel on my previous E90 M3, and now another coby wheel on my current E90 M3.

Here's some pics:

Looks great and I am sure the Coby Wheel is a good option for some but I do not want alcantara.

Yes. A Coby Wheel is a great option. Looks great.

But they don't do Leather or mixed Leather/Alcantra steering wheels. There is also an option to add profiles or groves for your hands that look wild on MB and Porsches.

Cheers

Any issues with the alcantara over time? I've been debating if I should get cobywheel. Just worry that the alcantara will get gross over time from hand sweat.

Never had any issues. Just clean it with a damp towel and a drop of dish soap occasionally and fluff it up with a tooth brush

Look at the mixed Leather/Alcantra steering wheels on the Royal Steering Wheel website. It is relatively inexpensive to retrim the steering wheel every 5-7 years.

Jumping in with a Royal steering refinish. I sent a standard leather M wheel to be converted to a flat bottom, black alcantara, with a red center stripe. The results look great! I have the standard blue stripe alcantara M wheel on the car now but figured I'd have this as backup when that needs to be replaced.

My primary requirement was to remove the existing leather and wrap around the foam vs on top of the leather as to maintain the same thickness. I had explored Coby given he a wonderful job on both my shifter and ebrake alcantara boots. However, he was not willing to first strip and then rewrap.

My only cause for concern, is I am not convinced this is the wheel I sent in. I wrote my name on the wheel I sent in and it's not on this wheel. Granted it could've been wiped off but I'm not 100% convinced. I sent a note to Jack to check. Would make sense as I'm not sure how they're able to do a conversion from round to flat. Regardless, wheel looks excellent. Much softer than my blue stripe. Maybe I should switch them now?

Lol what difference does it make if it was "your" core return or not? It's the same thing... It's not like you were keeping your original leather finish :/

Virtually all companies that do parts requiring core returns don't rebuild exactly your original component. They have a rotating stock so as to keep inventories afloat.

I’ve used just about all of the typical sw re-wrap vendors over the years. I’ve had Coby, DCSW, and royal. Imo royal does the best work but the communication aspect is sorely lacking.

Really, Lol? but I guess a fair question as I wasn't clear. I asked for my wheel to be rewrapped not for a replacement core when I initially inquired about their ability to strip/wrap. Nonetheless, Jack at Royal confirmed the wheel was stripped down and the rubber and foam were replaced and thus no additional thickness was added which was my priority. This couldn't be guaranteed at Coby core replacement or not. Just figured I'd share my experience as I know others have commented on wheels being further built up as opposed to stripped.
