Getting followed after filling up.

I saw this on the local news yesterday. This has probably been going on but does not get reported. Really shows how hard up people are getting.

A business man filled his Tahoe up on his way to work Tuesday morning. He put in $120 worth of fuel and drove to his office parking garage down the street. Well, from what the cops suspect happened was this. Groups of gas thieves are watching "ready to go to work" dressed people at the stations. They follow them and when the coast is clear they drain the tank.

My questions would be...
Security cameras? Like they were in their own vehicles.
Locking lids? Do that many cars not have them. Neither of my vehicles do.
Where did that put that much gas? Water barrels?

I bet he freaked when the low light came on. Pretty sorry though.

Locking gas cap. The one thing that always scared me while I had my truck was not being able to lock the gas lid or cap. Thankfully nothing happened, but times were a bit different when I did.

And another reason to pay as much attention to your surroundings as possible.

^ Only in Texas

Yeah thieves are watching the fuel tanks at my dads farm quite intently. Thankfully they're bone dry most of the time to prevent such acts.

Gas & Go's are ever more common now.

Yesterday, on the news, I heard crooks are draining gas directly from the gas station underground tanks in Canada. At one station, the crook completely drained all of the gas from the underground tank at the gas station. They're also targeted parked big rigs and buses, for the diesel.

That happened A LOT during the after math of hurricane katrina. People were stealing gas from cars in the middle of the night to run generators....

i bought a gas cap lock for my Fit.....

not because i was afraid of people stealing my gas.......10 gallons....not much to steal....

but i was more afraid of people pouring salt/sugar in my tank.....more damaging than 10 gallons of gas..........

Salt and sugar doesn't do much...it has to be sand.

Or water...

I saw something in a news report recently that thieves will even drill a hole in the bottom of your gas tank to drain it because it is so much easier than getting past all the things that can stop them from just siphoning.
