I started reading up on the E70 X5 Ms. From that, it sounds like they could be rolling nightmares from a maintenance perspective. I also asked myself if I really want to get rid of the M3, and decided that was a no. Beater SUV is my plan, now

FJ62. Perfect bulletproof beater alternative for any weather or off-roading the M can't handle. Unfortunately, gas mileage isn't going to be much better, but who cares?

Wish it was an X5M. However, with all the mechanical issues I've had with this one in the last year, I can only imagine what I would have spent on parts if it were an M. Such a smooth ride, plays movies, panoramic sunroof, plenty of space in the back, the list goes on. Just hope it holds up after all the various gasket replacements and air suspension issues.

Tahoes are, IMO, the ultimate do-all SUV. They look great, have decent power for hauling, and have pretty decent interior/tech.. plus way more room than an X5. From what I have read, way more reliable and cheaper to maintain, but still pretty damn good looking. For a beater alternative, older Landcruisers are legit AF and they will go up in value.. literally, bullet proof. I'm pretty sure this thing would run on glue instead of gas if I tried.

I guess I do things a little different than the majority of you guys. I really don't spend much money on any of my other vehicles. Keep the M in the garage under a cover, and drive it every nice day I can. My wife has a prius, which is surprisingly nice as a run around. We have a 2006 Buick sedan for back up reasons, a 97 Dodge 2500 for 4 wheel and boat duties, and I have a work truck that takes up all my commuting miles. I really enjoy the fact that any of my other cars can get dinged, and I don't care.

I traded my '11 E90 ZCP in on a B8 SQ5 end of 2013 because I wanted to have a vehicle that was better at going into the mountains vs a trackable DD. Sadly though I had a bad injury in 2014 and all my expectations went out the window. Started to regret giving up the M3 but didn't miss the payments. Tried out an M235i next and it was phenomenal to drive but didn't have the excitement or handling of a real M.
Now I'm in my E92 and the only way I would go back to sport SUV is if I was always using it for true SUV duties: skiing, biking, light off road, suburban status, etc and in that case maybe the X3M would have something to offer. My wife drives a B9 SQ5 and it is very capable but it can't compete with our M3s for driving enjoyment. |

I will be adding on a sporty SUV at some point in the next 12 months. I'm pretty set on the GC SRT. I drove two examples recently and loved it. It has a ton of stuff and I love the driving experience.
That said, I wouldn't trade my M3 for one. This car is the exact opposite of the SRT--some ways good, some ways bad. But from the perspective of driving engagement, the M3 is hands down the better option. And the lack of options in my M leaves room for something else that has a lot of tech. And personally, for any type of drivers car, the less technology (or at least, convenience-related tech), the better. |

I recently added a 2015 e84 x1 35ito our stable as my "winter beater" and to keep miles low on m3. While a capable car its own I'm struck by the relative lack of quality and refinement in x1 compared to m3. They are both based on the same platform but m3 has much less road noise and just feels much more solid. X1 also has more rattles and creaks inside. Steering feel is better than newer bmws but still no comparison to m3.

I just picked up another e90 m3 after not having one for a while. I have a 2018 Range Rover autobiography long wheel base which I love and can't see my self getting rid of unless for a exotic and a minivan 😂.

BUT, it is not an M3 replacement by any stretch. Drastically different vehicles. |
