Cheapest method to ship wheels???

Hi All - I have a set of wheels I am selling to another board member. What is the most cost effective way to ship these out to him?

If you are shipping wheels and tires: TireRack puts foam on wheel face and rear, then cardboard on both sides, then packing straps to hold it all together. The then ship each wheel / tire individually.

Wheels Only: use either the original boxes or go to a local wheel store and ask for their discarded boxes and put painter's tape on the lip, foam on face, bag them, then cardboard then place in box.

One more thing.. I use FedEx.

^^^+1, also go with Fedex for best cost and experience. If you don't have access to packing straps, you can secure the cardboard with tape and a heavy plastic wrap.

I've sent out about 10 sets of wheels around the country over the past 6 or so years.

Absolute cheapest way is Greyhound Parcel. If you go to a wheel shop and ask them for some boxes they usuallu have them around before the crush and recycle them. The wheels boxes come with foam and lip protectors moreoften then not.

You could ship a set of rims/tires across the country for about 120 dollars like this. The only hangup is you have to drop them off at a Greyhound terminal and the buyer has to pick them up... not to mention its slow. Its also only possible to get 300 insurance per box. So if the wheels are expensive I would absolutely not use this method.

FedEx/UPS will ship your wheels/tires across the country for about 180ish-200 insured packed in your boxes(sourced the same way).

If you want to but packing boxes & material, have them packed and then shipped. Your looking at probably 300-350 dollars.

The more work you do before shipment the less it will cost you.

As slicer noted, making the wheel/tire combo into a packing sandwich is generally the way to go.

If it is just wheels alone, it may be wise to double-box them.

UPS is often most efficient over shorter distances (1 state away or so). FedEx often best if going far. UPS owns way more trucks, FedEx owns way more planes.

If you have an account set up with one of the freight carriers, you often get a discount with them. Worth looking into if you sell things online with any frequency.

If the wheels are worth the trouble to sell and ship, it's probably worth it to pay for insurance. Saves much hassle and anger if there is shipping damage.
