Common e92 M3 Issues?
The time has come... I'm heavily considering going from an e46 M3 to an e92 M3. I'm looking at either an 08 or an 09 but was wondering if there were any "Common" Issues with the e92's. For example the e46 was notorious for Vanos issues along with Subframe... does the e92's suffer from anything like this... ?
Flame suit on if needed..... Thanks!!!

My engine blew up on a 6 week old 2011
But common issues? I don't think so. No cars are the same, you could buy one that's been SH*T on by the previous owner but doesn't have a single problem or you could have a brand new one like mine that was driven 'properly' and the engine blew. I know you're looking for 08-09 but if I was you I'd go for 10-11 if you can swing it, likely to have lesser miles and warranty for a longer period just in case something does go wrong |

Asshole drivers with huge opinions of how others should mod and drive thier cars. This isn't an issue with every E9x M3, but it is quit prevalent.

The only issue I have on my E92 is that it makes me smile everytime I drive it, well I had a blown EDC shock left front which was covered by warranty. Other than that none.

I think you need to expect less than perfect window sealing. I can always (on speeds > 50mph) hear some wind noise with my windows tightly shut. I keep trying to shut them only to realize they are all the way up. It comes with frameless windows I guess.

No mechanical issues after 3 yrs.. Bought new in 08', was 2 weeks away from it being built as an 09', ie. with new iDrive but that would have been 2 wks away from the Nurburgring.
Just put in some LCI tail lights a week ago. Coded them myself, as well as coding some other stuff like folding/unfolding mirror on locking/unlocking. Too easy to do and fun. The car's been driven hard for 18,000 miles and no mechanical issues. Had some software issues with the M-DCT which has been resolved for the most part with updates but still not where I would like it to be. As I've mentioned, car was purchased in 08' under the military sales program. Was stationed in Germany but knew that I was PCS'ing back to the States soon so everyday counts as that's another day I can potentially be spending on the Ring: |

Now that you mentioned it, I warped my brakes at the Ring. That had to do with me no changing out to race pads. Was replaced under warranty the first time, I paid myself the second. Now I'm running Performance Friction BBK so no more issues. But if any mechanical part could be stronger, it would be the brakes!

Awesome, thank you all for your input. I'm going to be looking at an 08 today... and see what happens.. It doesn't have the CF roof which I really want, so it "May" not be the one and I still have more HW to do on the e92's
@armyav8tor... Are you referring to the DCT lag issue... if so I wonder how that compares to an SMG. Also.. your car is sharp!!

After going through a 6 month search I think you are going to like the upgrade (I didn't own an e46 but did drive some). I have read that there are some issues with the CF roof lifting at the corners but I think it is rare.

I think you are right.. I'm a huge fan of v8 engines and chances are this will be the last v8 engine for an m3 ( at least for a while). Something about that I love.. Thanks for the tip about the Roof.. I'll have to check them out when I see one that has the CF roof.

I had the idle air valve issue and DCT lag. If the car has more than 37K miles pull the maintenance records to make sure the spark plugs have been changed. Good luck in your search.

ok basically the answer is NO!!! obviously no car is perfect and as you can see everyone has had their own little issues but there is no real reoccurring problem with the e9x m3

if you're talking about costly issues..there is a valve issue that some owners have, it's rare of very scary.
The most consistent failure has been the idle air control valve. |

Enter the States and I read the forums and everyone is having lag issues so paranoia kicks in and I begin to think that I'm experiencing the lag issue also. This lag issue was different from what I had initially. This is the one where it is lagging on the upshift side of the house. I have this lag when shifting from 2nd gear to 3rd gear below 2.5k RPM. This is easily replicated so I took it to the dealer and complained. The regional dude ended up driving my car around and told me there was no lag but he would update my software anyway (his son-in-law works for me :P). So, after the update, I was still experiencing the delay between 2nd and 3rd gear and I told him, WTF? He finally sat me down and tells me, look, there will be a delay if you are shifting in the lower RPMs but if you shift at higher points, it will be instantaneous. Low and behold, he's right. However, since the update, my shifts were rougher than before and when I'm coming to a stop the transmission would downshift very hard making the entire car jerk. And the bonus was that launch control stopped working completely. I talked to the service dude over the phone and he quickly starts doing research on this issue. Nobody seemed to be having this issue but he told me to bring the car in and the foreman will make the transmission "re-learn" the gears. I was thinking, what the heck does that mean? So I researched it and noticed some of the posts are about resetting the transmission, basically erasing the adapted settings the car learned from my driving style. I did that and everything was as smooth as the day I bought it. Canceled the appointment and now I'm enjoying my car again. Its still not where I like it to be because I am a control freak and the car still does stuff that I don't like once in a while but I am willing to give up some control for all the positives that the DCT brings. I have a little Mazdaspeed3 to row through the gears manually everyday. My M3 has to have the M-DCT because it is what makes it a M3 in my eyes. Technology packed! |

Main bearings on my 2011.5 car are going bad. I'm taking my car back in tomorrow so they can pull the engine and do repairs. Not very happy about this for a car I bought new less than a year ago.

Radiantm3- Can you elaborate on the bearing issue? How did you discover they were going bad?
