You guys think it's fair to go half half or should the dealership repair the whole thing for free?

Luckily you have a 50/50 warranty. Unless there are laws in your state, I'm not aware that there is much that you can do other than ask the dealer to honor the split warranty. Also, you need to protect yourself on the 50/50 split. Maybe a member here will be willing to look at the bill of repairs and let you know if the repair bill is fair or of it is way out of wack. Also you have to be careful that the dealer does not have inferior mechanics charging top dollar to do the repair as you will be the one driving it. You need an expert Indy in your area who is adept at rebuilding these motors. Or the suggestion may be you will need a donor motor. But be smart and ask questions here or hopefully you can PM with someone before just agreeing with whatever the dealer feels you should do. Again, it's your car, you will need to take control of the vehicle and the situation. This is terrible news.

Sorry to hear this terrible news. Hopefully, the repair cost will be reasonable.

Then it very likely needs an engine, not just bearings.

I'm more joking about the blowing up part ... but yesterday the shop checked it out and it's bearings

I drove a new Corvette with their automatic (which I think is GM's own box... not a ZF or Getrag but not 100% sure) and I swear I was controlling it with paddles. It held gears when I wanted, downshifted when I wanted, and really the average person couldn't tell it wasn't a fancy dual clutch.

But I also fall into the camp of 3-pedals isn't the end-all-be-all of a car. I want fast shifts, and I there's no way, even with my upgraded clutch in my E46 that I can shift as fast as the DCT. I just prefer paddles any day of the week. Again, personal preference.
Oh, I definitely don't fall into the 3-pedal camp either. I love both, have owned both, currently own both.

I love the single/dual clutch transmissions for their performance a two-hands-on-the-wheel-driving but I always want to be in control of the gear changes. Auto mode, to me, was put there as a way to appeal to a wider market (smart of the manufacturers) but absolutely paradoxical to a 'performance' car.

I guess I'm unique in that I would never, ever buy a torque-converter-equipped sports car but I would buy a single/dual clutch car (but never use auto mode).

In the case of modern torque converter automatics, that rev match and hold gears until you call for a shift, why not?

Seems pretty indistinguishable to me.

It's the mechanical coupling of the flywheel and the rear wheels that makes a clutch transmission so great - it's pure and instant and direct, without any filter or lag. Granted, I don't have experience with the latest autos so maybe they truly 'lock' just above idle, but then, I've not interest in them either. I doubt they do fully lock 100% of the time, though... I'd be surprised.

I like a clutch in a my sports car, I just don't require a clutch pedal

I require a clutch pedal

Some modern slush boxes have torque converter lockups.

And... clutched boxes aren't locked when the clutch is slipping (which is a similar period to when the torque converter is slipping, I'd think).

But, I'm not in a good position to judge-- I dislike all forms of automatic. I do probably dislike SMG the least, because it requires the driver to do the most to have the car drive properly (it's the least automatic).

Hope everything works out with the bearings. That's most definitely a bummer.

Quick acceleration of an e46 M3 and an e92 M3 below.
