That was pretty much criminal conduct by VW. They had to do a generous payout and not fight too much. Years ago, Toyota was generous with its rusted pickup trucks. But more often it seems like the lawyers are the best rewarded in class actions.

Yep. I missed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity there.

Except for the diesel-gate victims...I sold my TDI two weeks before the news (I should've consulted Nostradamus), and lost out on $5-6k cash + a net free car for a year since they bought back at the price I sold for (a year later).
Not to make you feel any worse but Maya received $7k. Essentially made money after driving the car for a year. She did however love her manual TDI. Next car was a 2011 E92 so she did ok.

My friend's dad bought a TDI Jetta wagon new for, I think, $26k + taxes. He put about 70k miles on it over 4 or 5 years and got a check for $22k.

My 2013 GLI, on the other hand, was not a diesel. So I didn't get anything out of it other than the value of my car dropping 35% overnight after the news first broke and my engine grenading itself immediately after warranty expiration.

What a joke.

Yea, my wagon cost me 24k (+ tax, tag, etc.). And I would've gotten about 22k from VW after over 4 years ownership and similar mileage. Instead, I sold just before the news broke after a little over 3 years ownership for 16k, and bought an M3 because I realized I can't drive a boring car. Financially, turned out to be a bad move, but what's ~10-15k overall savings when you get to drive an E9X M3 all of the time instead!!

I just can't imagine how this is even fixable given what has been learned about the rod and main bearings...there is no fix-all.
