Can you bring a guest with you? And if yes, can the guest drive or only stay in passenger seat?

I found out that you can NOT, which really sucks. I am in New York and wouldn't drive to South Carolina by myself. Really stupid on their part not to allow a guest. Each participant gets his/her own car for an M School anyway...
