2011 E93 M3 Fast Ticking Sound

Anyone familiar with this fast ticking sound coming from driver side of engine? I haven’t noticed it in the past. It got an oil change from BMW dealer a month ago but other than that no codes or errors.

https://youtube.com/shorts/z3eIHR0KU...I0-c0fHxEFbq3C

Loudest after 16 second mark on video.

sounds like a healthy S65 tractor.

i think that's just the injectors.

Could be weak chain tensioners. Nothing too abnormal though. Does it go away at higher engine speed?

I think it goes away at higher revs but the sound of the engine drowns out the fast ticking sound.

If you want to know. Switch chain tensioners and see if the sound shifts banks.

Say it is the chain tensioner, is it normal wear and expected function at 40k miles or something that could be catastrophic and needs to be addressed?

Not catastrophic…it will make a horrible noise as it gets really bad. I’ve only seen it bad once at 60k miles. Yours might be nothing, sometimes a new oil change will temporarily make the engine chatter a little bit. Noise may disappear after some miles.

Ah I see, ya I got a oil change less than ~700 miles ago. Could be due to that. Regardless thank you for the help on here. I feel a little better about it and learned something new.

It's normal sound. I agree about the fuel injectors just doing their piezo-clicky-click sound.

I thought the engine had to be re-timed any time the timing chain tension is released?

Not the chain tensioners. Only if the cam phaser bolts are loosened you would have to.

I don't think that S65 has piezo injectors. Or does it? Piezo injectors are usually in directly injected engines.

Yeah. You're right as these aren't super high pressure like direct injection. Just a simple coil.

Sounds like a normal S65 sowing machine to me.

Haha, if the S65 driver side engine bay is supposed to sound like a loud sewing machine then that’s fine by me.

They do man. It’s just part of the character of the motor. I mean if our valve covers weren’t magnesium, the valve train would be louder. Despite popular opinion they are pretty strong motors. Let it warm a minute or two and drive chill until up to temp. Change your oil every 5k. After that have fun.
