Aftermarket warranty vs rod bearing service

Hello all,

I recently purchased an E92 M3. its an '09 with just over 53k miles. Prior to any upgrades I want to take care of maintenance, and upon researching I have two routes to go down:

1) For $3200 I can get a 4 year/48k miles bumper to bumper warranty that covers everything from full power-train to A/C system, even down to the headlights and electronics. This will give me peace of mind knowing that not only the rod bearings, but the rest of the car is covered as well.

2) For roughly $2500 I can simply do the bearing service and call it a day - knowing that i will not have to deal with a blown engine any time soon.

Does anyone here have experience with an aftermarket warranty?

Hmm IF the warranty company would cover this without question, then the warranty looks appealing.. because then you could put the $ towards a dinan new engine

My thoughts exactly. Just don't want to run into an issue where they fight me on covering the new engine. Heard some horror stories with these aftermarket warranty's.

If you go the warranty route, you need to document all maintenance.

I’d do the warranty. The 9 year old car will be needing some work before it is 13. If you still have it then, do the rod bearings.

I just had my engine replaced under extended warranty. My maintanace record shows frequent oil changes.

what company are you working with on the warranty?

If you get a new engine and decide to sell it later on, your resale value will be effected.
Warranty might be more attractive though since other parts can be replaced.

Any other info you can share on what happened (RB, etc), the year/model, and what motor they replaced it with (new, used of equal value?)? very curious about this.

Motor replaced, due to failing rod shells? Did a separate post with a few more details mate?

Outside of creampuff cars, I really doubt that this makes a difference.

Well, I would pay more, probably substantially more, for a used E9x M car that had say, 120K miles on the car, but only 10K on a brand new engine... especially if it was something like a new Dinan Tuned Engine or something.. the idea of having less wear on the best part of this car makes it more appealing to me. But that's just me...

My aftermarket warranty has paid for itself less than a year into its 4 year term. You never know. I once went in for an oil change and came away with a $2400 charge for leaking mechatronics seal. cost me the $250 deductible. I also had a fuel sensor need replacement and the dealer wanted to replace the motor mounts as well. That was $1700. 2009 E92, 77000 miles. Bought through BMW dealer, although its third-party.

If you're servicing these cars at a shop, it's hard to imagine not at least breaking even on a warranty.

I am pleased to see this thread is not full of the "warranties are a waste of money no matter what" crowd. I would only ever purchase an aging European car without a warranty if I was planning on doing all the maintenance and repair work myself. That's a fair assumption for some people, but probably not most. My own warranty saved me close to $10k in the first year of ownership on work I would not have been able to do myself, though I haven't had to use the warranty since then.

Thank you all for the advice, it looks like the warranty is the way to go! If those who have warranties could give me some info on the company you are working with, that would be great.

Also, my one concern is I do have dinan tune/dct tune, and fabspeed exhaust. would these items potentially negate any warranty coverage?

I would just make sure, with absolute certainty, that the warranty would cover the FULL cost of a new engine as a result of rod bearings ... the cost of having some sort of contract dispute that you would have to fight might be a pain in the ass and too much to make it worth it. insurance companies aren't the easiest to get claims settled.

One of the hardest thing about owning these cars is constantly listening for knocking and worrying about a blown motor. It's funny tho, in Vegas you would have to be an absolute fool to take a bet with the same odds as our rod bearings wearing prematurely. That doesn't stop the worrying however. Personally, I am getting the work done, but at the same time I know I am wasting my money and am being foolish for doing it.

At least I'll sleep better at night!
