Red screen on Nav upon startup
I have searched, and found that this is an apparent common issue on the newer iDrive system, but have heard anything as a cause from CIC module, to video cable to the actual screen.
Today I started the car, and to my surprise when my Nav screen turned on, it was red. Nothing worked as far as the controls near the ebrake handle, though music was still playing via the iPod I had connected. After about 15 seconds the screen went black. I turned the car off, same thing. I did a quick search and read that some people have turned the car off for about 15 minutes to allow the CIC module to reset, then started the car, and it was fine. So I did this, and alas, the iDrive screen has worked fine ever since. What is the likely cause of this? I'm not looking for people to guess here. If you are knowledgable of this issue (are a BMW Tech, have had this problem before, and fixed it, etc), please chime in. I'm not too pleased. It's just another issue I can add to my list along with the fuel tank breather valve, and the A Pillar rattle I for some reason haven't taken the time to hunt down and fix. |

This means the CIC is dead (malfunctioning or not receiving power), or the video cable came loose from either the CIC or CID (display) side. It does indicate that the screen is working properly, however.

Sounds like a new cable is a lot cheaper than a CIC module. Any idea what each repair would cost? Hopefully it was just a one time thing and doesnt become a recurring issue. Im assuming a CIC module needs to be coded to the car? Are they hard to find used?

Reviving this 2.5 year old thread as this happened to me today. I started the car the CIC screen turned completely RED/ORANGE, then after 15 seconds went BLANK. Everything worked, there was just nothing on the screen. I was stressing out, but let the car sit over lunch and it came right back on when I restarted it. Whew....
After a proper SEARCH, I discovered it's probably a loose connection in the cable between the CIC and the CID. Another fix was to hold down the VOLUME button for 15-30 seconds. Cheers.

Hi, bring this topic back up. Several months ago, the dealer addressed the Blower Motor Wiring recall. Then a few months ago, I encountered the control display cycling between the BMW splash screen and a red screen. Not knowing were the Blower Motor Wiring is routed, is it possible that the cable between the CIC and CID was interfered with during the recall.

blower recall is no where near the CIC connection. its just a poor coincidence that this happened after the recall....blower recall is repaired in passenger footwell area.
CIC connections are behind the dashboard..... |
