Red face **Project-808 | Carbon Guard fabric DIY thread**

Project-808.com is proud to introduce to the forum a new product called Carbon Guard that has simplified installing carbon fiber fabric within your car!

No spray adhesive or heat gun needed!

Tools needed:
Trim tool or flat head screw driver
Sharp knife/blade

There are some amazing DIY threads on this forum already showing how to remove the trim. So i want to get to what most here are interested in. How easy is it to install the Carbon Guard material on your own trim.

Friendly reminder
: Try to keep the pattern of the weave the same on all the trim pieces. That way the pattern matches on the dash with the center console.

1. Place your trim on top of the fabric. Cut with sharp blade around the fabric leaving about an inch extra length on all sides.

2. Carefully pull the back of the fabric to expose the self adhesive backing. Please be cautious to not allow the material to overlap itself as it will be hard to pull apart.

3. Lay your trim piece on the adhesive side of the fabric. Try laying the trim down from one side to the other to avoid any wrinkles or bubbles in the fabric. The material does stretch without losing its pattern so any little imperfections can be rubbed out.

4. To cover the corners, cut small slits so they are able to fold over easily and stick without any wrinkles. Do this when covering the center console as well. It will help when doing the shifter cover and ash tray.

5. The rest of the material can be cut off then the remainder fold over as shown here.

DONE!

Color shown is Gloss Black.

I'd imagine pretty much the same way as the trim pieces -- take 'em off, cover, then re-install. From above, it seems pretty straightforward to cover them. Here's a little more detail:

Pull up the shift boot first, then unclip the shifter light and POWER/EDC/DSC connectors. You'll have to take out the iDrive control if you have it; I don't so I can't tell you how. You can then pull up on center console cover to snap it out starting from the back end first. You'll need to then unclip the lighter wires so don't pull it all the way off until this is unclipped. Unscrew the phillips head screws holding the ashtray/lighter group and take it off the console cover. If you search here and on the e90post forums you'll find more instructions and pictures.

Remove the top part of the ashtray cover and follow instructions to cover it as above. Do the same for the console cover. Then re-install. Seems like an easy job to me.

Cheers.

Anyway you can post some comparison pics of this with the stock M3 CF Leather.

I have tried my seat backs a few times, and the curves are just too much for the 3M 77 spray to hold it. This may be my solution, but it would have to match.

ersin pretty much nailed it with his post

Here is the X3 console but would be the same on any opening needed on the M3 trim. Take your blade and cut around the opening so there is about 1 or 2 inches of extra fabric to fold under the console. The fabric will need more slits for the corners so there are no wrinkles. Its really the only big difference between doing the console and dash trim.

The ash tray can be tricky but not terrible. Heres a great DIY found on E90post

Excellent post sir! Thank you!

I will be doing my center console on my M3 to match the carbon leather thats on the dash. So I will do another DIY for that if it helps others.

Our Matte Black finish is almost identical.

Here it is in the sunlight on the far right of the picture. Factory M3 carbon leather trim compared to Carbon Guard in matte black.

The pics of Carbon Guard above look real close to leather, but it doesn't say that it is leather. I'll let Jesal answer if that's the case or not.

But taking off your trim is super easy. Get a plastic or nylon trim pry tool and pry one end of the trim a little bit, then the other end until its far enough off that you can reach your fingers in and pull it off. It's just a friction fit. Sometimes the little plastic thingies on the trim or panel come off but you can just push them back on. You could use a screw driver or some other thing to pry them off but I'd use a towel over it so it doesn't scratch.

Cheers.

Correct.

The Carbon Guard fabric is not leather.

Its carbon fiber fabric that matches the carbon leather only by color. You will not have stitching like the real carbon leather found in the M3.

Here is a great DIY for the entire trim removal for the doors and dash. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137527

Jut received my matt carbon from Jesal c/o Nate at IND

What a great product!!! Took me about an hour to all my trim pieces; dash trim, door trims and back door short trim.

Looks exactly like OEM

If you got stock Titanuim Shadow trim this is a MUST do!!
