Exclamation Official S65 Rod Bearing Condition Example Thread

Seeing as more and more people are starting to get their rod bearings changed and posting pictures of their condition on the forum, I thought it might be a good idea to create a central thread for people to post in. I think it will give everyone a good idea of how their's may possibly look from all the examples.

Please post a few quick photos and list your mileage.

Thanks!

I'll start:

85,000 miles

Can someone describe what characteristics these should exhibit under normal wear? Also what are characteristics of abnormal wear?

I don't rebuild engines or look at rod bearings much so its hard to decipher what is going on in the pics.

Will pictures of a brand new engine with 4000 miles and bearing failure do for you? They're already posted in the bearing wiki thread. Of course there was the guy with 1500 miles and rod bearing failure, but nobody got pictures of that one.

Want to know what's funny? There's another guy on the forum, just like you. I won't mention his name. He was just like you trolling in every thread he could find about RB failure. Here's the funny part. In the past few weeks, he's been on here asking for help with a bearing failure. Either his or his buddy's car has now had RB failure. Strange that he's no longer trolling the threads and is now the one asking for help.

I think I dodge a bullet here

2009 e92 - 55K miles - never tracked or consistently driven hard. Most of the time I am commuting to work on 35-50MPH roads.

Sorry, they did not track which bearings belong to each cylinder but regardless this looks bad for 55K miles and non tracked.

Good call making the preventative replacement, though I'm sure some will chime in stating those bearings look barely broken in...

Did you happen to do an oil analysis prior to replacement?

I got the kit but with further research decided it does not add much value for me. The bearing replacement was to prep for a supercharger later this year. I just decided to get it done sooner.

Bought the car with 101,000 on the clock. Fourth owner. This is a dedicated track car, so I'm in the process of swapping out components with new parts to make the car as reliable as possible. Things like plugs, water pump, belts, tensioners, throttle actuators with upgraded gears and so on. This of course included the rod bearings. I went with BE bearings with their custom ARP rod bolts.

For fun, I sent a sample to Blackstone back in November and not surprisingly it revealed that the bearings were on their way out.

Enjoy:

It's really looking like that's the magic number to change bearings at: 100,000Km/60,000 miles. Good catch ! What did you replace with? ..and did you have an oil analysis done previous to this?

But it doesn't....not at all. There are a multitude of ways to spin a bearing. A dirty install, improperly torqued bolts, flaw in the bearing, an oiling issue, etc. What point do you think it proves posting about one engine that blew up after it got new bearings? That new bearings aren't a solution? If so, it'll take more than one or two examples to prove that. You're ignoring hundreds of examples of blown engines and crappy looking bearings but expect us to buy this bullshit based on one example?
