What is this thing in the trunk?

I bought a used E90 from a dealer and there is a hole cutout in the driver side lining in the trunk, and underneath it is a what looks like a heat sync with wires going into it. Can anyone tell me:

1) What is this?

2) Is it stock or aftermarket?

3) If it is not stock, what is supposed to be there?

4) I saw from pics online that there is some sort of tray that sits there usually; does the stock tray fit that cutout or was the cutout modified?

5) Why might the tray have been removed, is there any reason not to just buy one and put it back?

See photo attached, thanks!

That looks like an Amplifier for speakers or sub woofers.

That's the factory amp for the speakers. Looks like someone cut the wiring to add an aftermarket system, and then cut out the aftermarket system when they sold it to a dealer. Do you speakers work?
The tray you're talking about just pops into the carpet and should be available at most places (ECS, FCP, etc.)

SEMOM3 is correct. Its the factory audio amp. It looks like a poor job of installing aftermarket components was done and they didn't bother to return it to 100% before ditching the car.
