So recently, I went to my car and unlocked it. It made a weak chirp and then wouldn't unlock. I came back to it later and it was working okay. I started the car just fine. I then went for a drive and came back.

Background. I recently just retrofitted the alarm system and coded it with carly. I did not program it with ista or take it ti the dealer. Everything has been fine for a week or so.

Today after the drive, I checked the negative batt cable to make sure it wasn't loose. I took it off and reattached it. Then the car went back to total dead. No lights, no key less, no dash.... nothing.

The alternator is new, I did that recently as a preventative measure. Also before the car died, I checked the voltage. It was 14v+ while on.

Any ideas???????

Check battery while off. 14+ volts while on means alternator works fine

did you go to BMW and have the battery cable recall work done? If your car was part of the recall...

Jump it. Buy one of those Lithium Ion Battery Jumpers.

Disconnect the alarm...to get it rolling

If your battery is more than 6-8 years old, it probably needs to be replaced.

There is a battery cable recall. The connection to the fuse box comes loose and car dies while driving. I think the connection is under the passenger side footwell.

Use the battery cable recall as an excuse to have the BMW dealer look at it. Recall service is free.

Pretty sure you cant code the retrofit alarm with Carly. So undo that when it starts.

Good luck,

Cheers

could be battery distribution box but grab the cable going to the jbe behind the glovebox and shake it see if any lights come on or off.

I bought a lithium jumper for future issues. Fortunately the alternator is new and the battery is only 2 years old. It's in good shape. The problem was with the batt cable at junction box, so its a recall issue.

It was the cable at the junction box. The lights came back on, so I am going to have the recall done. Do you guys call the number with BMW NA or just call a local dealer. I called one dealer here and they didn't;t get back to me. Any suggestions?

I ended up taking it to Perillo BMW in Chicago. Jimmy (service advisor) was great. They got me in for service with in day lead time. Took about 3.5 hours. They did the batt cable, new airbag, and blower motor wiring. Also had a 2 series loaner for that time. Over all, I had a good exp with them. Also thanks to everyone for your input about this issue.
