Oil temps high?

Oil temps recently here (see pic)... 2013 w/ 22k miles.

This is my 2nd e9x M3... never seen either car over ~210 unless I was really asshatting it or on the track.

This car now is always about here once warmed up. For the past couple years did not ever see it above 210.

Was only 78 deg this am.

Describe what's going on here or this post is useless. For the ambient temp of 70's that is a high temp motor temp. I see my M in this temp range when it is hot out and I'm NOT MOVING IN TRAFFIC. Lack of airflow on a hot day will produce this temp reading.

The temp needle on my e90 will show about that temperature, on the highway, with the ac on in 105°F+ weather, but never at < 80°F. Air conditioner on or not, moving or not.

My 2013 zcp e92 36k.... will see those temps in as described conditions, stop n go traffic however the outside air temp does not seem to matter as much as lack of airflow. My car got that hot this morning 60 or so degrees outside...not driving hard.

Ill add this....i have had my RB's done and it would do the same thing.. temp spikes with oem RB's...so cross that off the list!

Also i just got a M performance steering wheel on my car today so i can now monitor coolant & oil temps separately. from what I've seen so far my oil temp didn't go past 210 when driven harder the water temp was in the 185 range. those and ok numbers.

Yea that seems high. My temperatures hit that when I'm lapping at a track day, ambient air temperature in the 80s. Could also go a bit above 210 on a hot day, heavy throttle then sitting.

Mine creeps up past the 210 mark in hot weather also, but comes back down with airflow. Makes sense I guess. I also noticed this when I started swapping out different oils. I think I first noticed it after going to Liquimoly.

Also, check your air dams. If its cracked underneath, Malek had told me it may block the oil lines in a way it wasn't meant to, causing more ambient heat.

Remember...that oil temp gauge is actually a oil & coolant combo reading. if its at 210 or above that does not mean thats what your oil temp actually is... 210 to 220 oil temp is nothing to be concerned with IMO.

There isn't much you can do about it so why worry. My car also 2013 with 22k miles, i have seen temps like that but not systematically. Typically only after burst of accelerations. I think i've seen it stay there too but never after warm up without pushing the car some.

I don't think that's correct especially when my known water temp is 192-195 and oil 210+

lol, just noticed that you took the pic going 70Mph with MDM on , anyway I think the temp is fine. Mine gets like that when I keep her in the power band for a while.

I'm guessing he was in 5th gear also by the looks of the speed and rpm's.






Ok, I'm really not that good at estimating rpm's, the big 5 in the center of the cluster gave it away.

Right there with you on this, looks like we both run on the warm side. It bothers me just a bit but I figure in the Houston heat this car is going to run a bit hot. I fluctuate between 210 and right where the needles sits below. I have a Carly and will measure the temp with that to know firm numbers.

I know there are a few BMW Technicians on here, would love to hear them weigh in on this range.

Seems I get here either way......driving like an old lady or spirited driving early on weekend morning with no traffic. Its does cool off to 210 and climbs back up to where it is. Wonder if I should change out the thermostat?

That definitely looks high, unless you were going some serious spirited driving or a track day your temp should sit right at 210.

This is about where my oil temp sits if I'm running around town. It's been like that through ~22k miles and 4 oil changes and at this point I've stopped worrying. I will say it tends to drop down to the 210 mark if I'm on the highway.

Like others have said, its a bit high for the outside temps you're seeing unless you're playing with the throttle. I normally see this kind of temp on a 90+ weather and not moving the car. Once the car gets moving the needle is always slightly above the 210 mark. I have seen it get to the 4th mark to the right but thats when I'm at Autocross. On average thermostats get stuck open causing the car to not reach operation temps in a timely manner. I had to change mine out for this around the 40k mark but noticed it doing it around the 30k mark. You could always try to run a different blend of coolant or add an additive. Like other have said that shows oil but it is truly a mix of both coolant and oil temps. The better you cooling system runs the cooler the block stays aka cooler oil temps. Conclusion, I wouldn't worry about it to much just keep an eye out...

Today was a pretty hot day around 90 and my needle never went that high. Maybe just a tiny bit over the middle but that's it.

Are you low on oil? One time I was low on oil and the temps were higher than usual.

Thanks everyone else. This is sort of where it ends up, no matter how I drive it (ie sitting in traffic on a hot day, or in the case of a photo, driving on a 20-30 mile trip on the highway, not pushing it, just cruising in 5th gear on a cool-ish morning for Atlanta). Hot day, in traffic, reads here. Cold day, on highway, good airflow, not driving aggressively, reads here.

The car used to remain stable around 210, as did my now departed E93 M3.

Oil is right between high/low via IDrive. Hmm. I'll add and see.

Exactly my situation... granny driving or aggressive driving, always reads here when warmed up. If you do measure w/ Carly, keep us updated.

I'm curious, does everyone drive in 5th gear at 70mph? For me I'm always in 7th gear when driving at that type of speed, unless of course I am about to crush the hopes and dreams of an Audi, Mustang, Camaro insert vehicle name here... I just can't ever recall cruising at that speed and holding Rpm's at 4,000. Could this be why OP is running a bit hotter, as I have never seen my gauge go over 210 on normal day to day driving regardless of the duration of the drive . Also I imagine the M3 would just guzzle gas at that rpm.
