Have around 13k.
I've been having another issue besides the transmission malfunction. Sometimes when I shift from 2nd to 3rd I get a rough shift.....this only happens from 2nd to 3rd in any shift mode. Normally it will happen after I've been driving slowly in 2nd gear like in a parking lot then take off and when I shift to 3rd, I get the rough shift. Anyone else experience this or know what could be the issue. Otherwise, I really enjoy dct and hope that these issues can be resolved easily. |

Just to update my last post in case it might help others. My dealer has had my car for the past week and they finally determined that the issue with the rough shift is the dct controller unit, whatever that is? I was also having an issue when downshifting in S4 or S5 it was not rev matching properly sometimes, normal from 3rd gear to 2nd. I hope this fixes the issues because I'm getting tired of going back and forth from the dealer.

I've heard of so many stories with faulty/failed/malfunctioning DCT transmissions I really want to take a flight to Germany and slap BMW in the face. It's really ridiculous.
I have two friends with brand new '11 E92s and both, yes both of their cars have had these messages. One received a new transmission (at 1,300 miles) the other is at 7,000+ miles and still dealing with it - trying to get a new one as well. I too have had a malfunctioning transmission on my '11 E92 - I got rid of the car. I was dealing very intimately with my insurance company and found out that they pulled documentation on THOUSANDS of M3s with similar transmission malfunctions/clutch problems/systematic failures/etc. related to the DCT. I don't want to say it's a poorly engineered/built transmission since I am not in a position to do so, however, there have been way too many problems I've read on the forums, heard of through third-party sources and personally experienced. I've had a lot of nice cars in my day and as much as I LOVED and still LOVE the M3, it's not the best built of cars. BMW is simply cashing in (with record quarters - they are the most profitable of the 3 German automakers) and they simply don't give a shit. I've already had BMW replace an oil pump, ignition coils, TPMS monitor on my '11 328i Convertible with less than 4,000 miles. My 550i always gave me plenty of headaches. Couldn't wait to get rid of that thing. Never had one problem with my E39 540i... Time to buy a Benz...

Call it what you wanna call it, this is reality. There have been multiple service bulletins for dealers regarding M3 DCT issues. Go do some research.

I call either BS on the insurance companies part (i.e. they are feeding you bad info... especially considering an agent that you would talk to on the phone would not likely know this info on behalf of the company) or you are exagerating to prove a point. There is no way your insurance company cares about BMW maintenance issues, collects data on it and then sends out corporate wide "bulletins" to its agents to let them know of the "thousands of DCT issues". Why? Because if your DCT breaks, the insurance company could care less because it is a warranty issue with BMW and you aren't going to make a claim to them. Probably around half the guys on this forum run a DCT and if "thousands" were having issues you would see threads daily. It isn't the case as we only see the odd DCT thread (since the lag resolved as mentioned) and just as many or more 6MT issue threads. I know 4 people with DCTs and not a single issue. That doesn't prove anything either as it is too small of a sample but I suggest the "thousands of DCT issues" with YOUR insurance company is BS because if it was representative of all insurance companies than there would be tens of thousands of issues in North America and I expect we would know about a problem that large Secondly, the DCT is built by the same company that builds the DCT for Ferrari (based on what I have read). I wouldn't say that it is a poorly built/engineering transmission. It is a wonderfully built transmission but, yes, even wonderfully built mechical items will have issues from time to time.

Secondly, yes, everyone is aware of the service bulletin. It has corrected a "software/programming" issue that no longer exists. Sorry you had an issue with your DCT but why did that precipitate you getting rid of the car? Do you get rid of every car that has a maintenance issue? Anyway, not trying to be sarcastic but more curious why you say you got rid of the M3 for DCT issues?

So after 31k miles I got a "Transmission Malfunction" error when I started my car, it wouldn't even let me get it out of park. After letting it sit for a few it started back up without the warning and I took it to the dealer and they said it may need to get reprogrammed.
After a quick search on the forum I saw that this was a solution for a few others on this thread and was wondering if a reprogram actually worked or if they ended up having to get a new transmission down the road? Any updates would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

I don't think anyone should worry about the transmission. I mean there are thousands and thousands of DCT m3's on the road. Obviously there will be a couple that have problems, for instance there have been engine replacement, differential replacements, transmission replacement etc... This is also one of the first BMW's to get the Double clutch transmission.
After I had my transmission replaced, it has been rock solid for the past 20K miles.
